Dude, I had never even HEARD of this guy's name prior to his death. What is going on here!? Why are people freaking out. Am I that out of touch?

Even my liberal wife was aware of who this guy was. Was anyone else like me?

I know who Ben Shapiro is. But Charlie Kirk!? This entire time both the left and the right either hates or adored this guy? What are you all surfing on your cell phones!?

I knew him because of the memes that distorted his face to look like “Butthead” from the cartoon and the “change my mind” meme. I didn’t know how ingrained his shitty answer-as-accusation or racist dogwhistle was in right wing circles.

[–] ChairmanMeow@programming.dev 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Isn't Stephen Crowder the guy in the change my mind meme?

I'd never heard of him. Or Ben Shapiro. Online shit talkers are boring on average.

[–] Wahots@pawb.social 7 points 2 days ago

I knew him after he dressed up in kink gear a decade ago to "own the libs"(?) on some college campus, and his second in command got catastrophically drunk, passed out, and shit her pants like a horse at a college party that same year. I assumed they never recovered from the double bout of extraordinary cringe, but apparently they did?

Apparently I've been living under a rock, or the guy was deep underground.

Yeah, I believe I watched a video or snippet of his or Steven Crowder and stopped. You can tell that they edit all the good arguments out and only publicize online the ones where they get destroyed in.

Also has that ingenious tactic of speaking loud, proud, and stopping the other person so that the other person can't even get their point across.

The only defense against stuff like this is not engaging at all. These people set up a stand on sidewalks and school campuses hoping to get some good content, and these people just line up for him

[–] Core_of_Arden@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 days ago

I saw him in a debate once. Thought he was clever at using fallacies, but an incredibly stupid, hateful, insufferable know-it-all (who didn't know that much)... So never gave him any attention.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 4 points 2 days ago

Never knew him before his death because I'm not 'murican

[–] RoquetteQueen@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Unfortunately I knew. I don't know how you didn't. I'm jealous.

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I also didn't know. I hadn't even heard Ben Shapiro's voice until like a year or two ago. I don't get how people who aren't interested in that Far Right Wing stuff end up being exposed to that nonsense.

[–] dom@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago (5 children)

The algorithms often serve that stuff up to people who aren't far right if they engage with it. And that includes comments disputing the comments made in the videos or arguing.

The algorithm doesn't care about your beliefs. It just cares about what gets you emotionally involved enough to engage.

Same. No clue who he was..

[–] StrawberryPigtails@lemmy.sdf.org 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I didn’t. Still trying to figure out why I should care.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 5 points 2 days ago

You shouldn't.

[–] Lootboblin@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I heard about him once before when he said that Finland shouldn’t join NATO because they are too ”russian”. Well you can’t expect knowledge from an uneducated nazi.

[–] gitgud@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You've been CANCELLED sir/ma'am.

[–] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Thanks, I couldn't find the exit. Thxbai

[–] orenj@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 2 days ago

I only ever knew him from his JDV-adjacent tiny face memes, and never by name.

[–] interdimensionalmeme@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 days ago

I was vaguely aware that he was one of those ghouls who uses the aestethics of "debate" as a shield to spews hatred and turn the knife in culture war wounds, a person who used their platform to foment selfishness and evil in the heart of millions while saying "it's just free speech bro" as if that made him innocent.

And of course, that it exactly WHY he was doing all this, this duplicitous abuser of free speech true goal is the destruction of free speech, by saying things so heinous as to provoke the condition in which free speech could be abolished so that his vampiric masters can finally silence the discordant mobs forever.

[–] thewebroach@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

Nope. I did know some morons out there thought mass or school shootings weren't a big deal and complained civil rights encroached on their feelings of white supremacy. Never knew his name specifically because it feels like there's a whole cluster of those idiots who no one ever taught the Golden Rule to. Be kind and treat all people respectfully.

I felt bad about him dying because having idiotic ideals doesn't mean he didn't deserve life, but I also kind of chalked the event up to darwinism. If someone constantly puts themselves in front of the masses promoting hate and violence, its only a matter of time before hatred and violence finds them. In that aspect, he probably wasn't fully innocent of the event himself as so many have made him out to be. I never heard of Hitler himself ever personally killing anyone, but his rhetoric and influence of others was the cause of plenty of deaths. Murder is always wrong.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I only found out who he was when someone was talking about the Gavin Newsom podcast a few months ago

I knew who he was from the meme, and I knew he was some sort of alt-right influencer, but other than that I couldn't have told you much about him. Honestly still can't. I don't care for politicians or anyone in that circle of influence.

I have friends and colleagues all over the political spectrum. Guess which ones really don't like it when I say "can't we all agree that they all suck and just get along?" Yeah, it's the conservative/authoritarians. I mean yeah, the liberal/progressives who fight for us are more aligned with our — that is to say, those of us on Lemmy who lean left — views might be better, but they still exist in a grey area, they still do what they need to to get ahead. We accept that those things are necessary but I don't think any of them are saints. But on the other side? They believe their leaders can do no wrong, and that is worrying. But they love when Trump does bad things to dark-skinned people or the LGBTQ+. They love him for the things we despise him for, from the child predator shit, to the attack on the country almost six years ago, the felony convictions, and all the piss poor decisions he's made in office.

[–] sobchak@programming.dev 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I watch leftists who occasionally covered him. He was extremely popular on TikTok with children to college-age people. He was also close to Trump, and I think Trump sent him to Greenland a while back with the VP on that "diplomacy" trip.

I'd heard his name but had no idea who he was.

I looked him up and was like "I gotta join in the pile-on"

Really, I'm here for the spectacle and it's too rich that this dude spouting gun nut nonsense took a shot to his neck. I don't care if he lived or died, I don't celebrate gun violence, I wish I lived in a different kind of society. But I don't, so I'm gonna laugh

And I'm laughing even harder when conservatives clutch their pearls and demand that feel bad. Choke on my indifference, you fucking phony chuds

[–] VoxAliorum@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago

I still don't know who he was. Just that many people were deeply unhappy with his existence and that he was perceived as far right. I also don't care.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago

I had no clue who he was until he was shot. They always target the nobodies.

[–] 1141kizzie@thelemmy.club 6 points 2 days ago

I didn't knew him until death. I am not from west

[–] LainTrain@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I knew about him vaguely just from staying in the loop with politics casually since 2016 or so. But I haven't heard of him in a long time.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

i literally knew him for the shrunken face faux gotcha memes from long ago. figured he must have been some far right us pundit. then he got shot in the neck.

[–] Jimmycrackcrack@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 days ago

I thought I did, because people were saying he was the "change my mind" guy and I remembered him from some internet memes a looonng time ago. Turns out that wasn't even Charlie's thing, he just kind of adopted it and was known for that. So yeh, I thought I knew who he was and turns out he was even less significant.
