Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Being a guy sucks, being a girl sucks. You don't get to opt out! Life must also be shit for you!

TBH I think misogyny is much more deeply rooted in society than transphobia.

And here's the controversial take that'll bring me a lot of hate: the root of transness itself is somewhere between misogyny and misandry. Our generation can't defeat that, but we can target transphobia and hope that our children will come for misogyny and misandry 💪💪💪

the root of transness itself is somewhere between misogyny and misandry

That is the worst possible way you could say that. Even if you think people embracing gender norms for euphoria unintentionally reinforces harmful divisions, that isn't something inherent to transness itself. We can have gender without mistreating people for it; it's just an ongoing struggle to minimize mistreating people.

What makes you feel that way? How does it jibe with people who reject both male and female identities, or who embrace both?

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

Lowkey, this is how you make "allies" XD

damn this is gold. that guy's a genius. he might have weird views but at least they're consistent and well thought-through (edit: except the "women are all stupid" part).

i also really cackled at the "damn, cheese, gender, what else do they deny themselves?" as if a gender is something you're enjoying. really brightens my day that some people see it that way so instinctively.

I love trans-inclusive radical misogyny. it's so blursed. imagine if we had this instead of terfs.

[–] stray@pawb.social 15 points 1 day ago

You've got me thinking about Pride and Prejudice and how Darcy's flavor of misogyny could be interpreted as hatred of patriarchal limitations on the social class "women" rather than a hatred of what women actually are. That is, he hates the behavior women act out as part of a performance they've been forced into, but he doesn't fully think through the concept of systemic oppression because he has no educational background to support that level of introspection, and so he's left blaming women. I'm sure there's probably quite a lot of writing on that angle already, but it's the first time it's ever occurred to me.

His battle with Rowling will be legendary

[–] vinceman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 76 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Honestly, I don't know if it would be productive but I think it would be a horrid afternoon for Rowling so I would absolutely support this.

[–] DaedalousIlios@pawb.social 13 points 1 day ago

No, I don't think it would be productive in the least, but it would be hysterical and worth eating popcorn to!

I want MORE

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 85 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Amazing. On the surface everything I read is bigotry and disdain, but I can't help liking the guy. At the very least he seems to have the consistency to choose his very own flavor of bigotry.

Not humor though; as far as I understand OOP he's 100% serious. Maybe one of those people that are kinda half aware that they're being an asshole just for conversation.

[–] stray@pawb.social 13 points 1 day ago

He sounds pretty autistic, and I mean that somewhat affectionately and not at all as an insult. His manner of thinking feels personally familiar to me.

Say we lived in a society that let dogs vote. You wouldn't have to hate dogs to be real about the fact that they're not our intellectual equals and to be frustrated with a system that gives them decision power that affects everyone in society. And you'd be even more frustrated when people around you say you're a bad person for being dog-phobic.

I think that's the internal world he's living in, based on a series of false premises that he genuinely believes to be true. I think that if these false facts were corrected then his conclusions would naturally improve. It's how it worked for me.

[–] CameronDev@programming.dev 108 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So, where can I watch this series?

[–] buffing_lecturer@leminal.space 40 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"The Guy" is as the uncle of Philomena Cunk. The Guy on...

If we must have rude people, I want more of that guy among them.

That's just the average lemmy user (derogatory)

[–] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 58 points 1 day ago (4 children)

If the story is true, and my guess is that is and based in a Spanish speaking country, I think I kinda love the guy. Like a living Wholesome Redneck meme.

[–] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 30 points 1 day ago

Honestly, having worked in kitchens, this is sorta just how chefs are. You really need an oversized ego to run a kitchen well, and you have to be a little crazy to pull it off. They're somehow either the best or worst people in the world, and sometimes you get a Guy like OP's who is both simultaneously.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 26 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Couldn't it also be that the guy exists, but the demand for stories about him is larger than him, so OOP chose to cater to that demand?

I like the "accidentally scared a 17yo out of an eating disorder" though, you can't make that shit up.

Well, it's something I guess?

Dude is a GTA V side character for real

I hope the updates keep coming. We need to study this goober.

Is there a pool going on whether "Not Gay Name" is actually gay too? He sounds so closeted, it'd be easy money.

[–] stray@pawb.social 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I don't think so because he seems jealous of the bisexual person. I think for him it would be better to have a male partner, since they're so much more competent, but that he unfortunately only finds himself attracted to women.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 3 points 1 day ago

Don't forget berating the bi OOP for having "shit taste" in men

[–] huppakee@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

he unfortunately only finds himself attracted to women

I don't know many straight guys who actually think that, yet it do know multiple gay men who are low-key misogynists and really glad they're not into women. I feel like "Not Gay Name" is a younger version of a gay man i know, who almost got married to a woman who eventually found out he was cheating just not with girls.

[–] pulsewidth@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

I'd go in on that pool. None of his reactions exude disgust or distaste - more just an internal logic of possible inconveniences, compromises, or difficulties for those that are gay - such as not being seen as attractive by other gays, or discrimination/harassment.

Definitely seems like he's thought it through and that these could be his own counterarguments for coming out that he came up with.
