The lack of people actually attacking the ice members is sad. The only reason this man got away is because HE fought back.

He might as well have been alone for all the bystanders did.

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 69 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Drove away with unslashed tires, sad

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 37 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (3 children)

Was thinking the same.

Where are the 13 year old troublemakers at? We used to throw bike locks on the bike cops wheels when we were kids. And they weren't fucking terrorizing our neighborhood.

Get the kid with the crackhead parents whose been through the system a dozen times before puberty to do the dirty work, he's in and out of the precinct in a couple hours.

Edit: can you imagine seeing a fucking teenager straight up pants these clowns? Overdub it with yakety sax.

[–] Soulg@ani.social 31 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

Well the difference is that these freaks are much much more likely to arrest and/or just shoot for you for doing stupid pranks like that than the bike cops in your neighborhood were.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

Importantly, because they know they are unlikely to face any consequences. You no longer have a justice system semi-protecting you.

Potato in the exhaust pipe! I learned that one from columbo

They should at least pull down their masks. Pantsing would be funny, but clearly they care about hiding their identity, so removing that would be more useful.

Simultaneously very heartening and incredibly frustrating to watch. The victim had to fight so fucking hard while everybody else was being incredibly passive and meek.

Shout-out to the girl in the black dress for being the bravest of all of them and showing how to be a proper menace.

[–] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 17 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Honestly, my thoughts too. It's easy to be an arm chair activist and say what you would do (myself included) and an entirely other thing to actually intervene

[–] SinAdjetivos@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

This is one of those "nail that sticks up" issues and setting expectations for others and what is expected of you in those situations.

To be perfectly honest I'm pushing this point for entirely selfish reasons because I do not possess the self-control to remain that passive in those situations and have the scars to show for it. It might be a character flaw on my part, but I also understand that it is safer for everyone when it's a mob that stands up vs. just one or two individuals.

[–] answersplease77@lemmy.world 17 points 4 days ago (2 children)

get people to cover for you and wear a mask then knife their tires and run away on a bike or anything. people have to fight back

[–] douglasg14b@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

tires

What a weird way to spell back.

The fact that live kidnappings and abductions are met with so little resistance is terrifying.

[–] Rivalarrival@lemmy.today 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

You don't knife tires to fight back against ICE.

ICE is the symptom, not the disease. If ICE was a persistent cough, knifing tires is treating it with Robitussin. Except that this particular cough is caused by tuberculosis, and the Robitussin will just make you feel better. While you die.

You need to treat the disease, not the symptom. To fight back against ICE, barbecue a billionaire.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 days ago (5 children)

That doesn't stop someone's friend from being kidnapped.

Edit: You're making a false dichotomy out of this, seemingly out of bad faith.

Your analogy is broken in just about every way imaginable as treating the symptoms is often done in conjunction with treating the disease.

Why? Often treating the symptoms is a life-saving measure in the short-term while treating the disease is a long-term solution. Done simultaneously. In cases where symptoms are not life-threatening it is still treated for comfort and ability to function.

Both have to happen simultaneously.

If all you do is sit back and try and fight the big problem and you don't tackle the little problems eating away at the fabric under you. Eventually there won't be any more fabric to stand on to fight the big problem.

Standing around filming and shouting isn't enough. This looks exactly like how we're letting Ukraine fight for their lives while we're standing around doing very little and calling it support ♥️ 🇺🇦 🕊️

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 33 points 5 days ago

Fucking awesome. We love you Chicago.

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 36 points 5 days ago

True courage against masked invaders violently kidnapping people on the streets of the USA. What a pathetic authority. Cowards. And so much restraint from fellow humans who want to do more to help but know they cannot against the thugs that showed up that day. Shows just how far the USA has fallen to satisfy a rapist felon president and all his billionaire puppet masters.

Sometimes I feel like being nihilistic and defeatist, then I see shit like this. The community fighting back.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 22 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

You got masked men, one in street clothes, one in gear I can buy on Amazon, attempting a kidnapping in broad fucking daylight. FFS, some masked rando this week just pointed a pepper-ball gun at a woman in the car next to him! For filming him. (Note here: No court of law will expect an average civilian to know the difference between a pepper-ball gun and a "real" gun. In any case, "less lethal" rounds can still be lethal. You saw a GUN.)

IANAL, but I know more than most about gun rights. I'm a liberal gun nut so it behooves me to understand these things best I can. I have watched hours of YouTube on various cases and how they played out.

PRO TIP: Self-defense laws are far more restrictive than most on the left or right understand. The technicalities, state to state, are rough to internalize. Most depend on some notion of "reasonable threat". What did you see, what did you feel, was happening in the moment?

Remember that kid who shot the YouTube asshole in the mall? Everybody had an opinion when it happened. Here's a respected GunTuber/lawyer's brief on how and why he was found not guilty. You can get a taste of the complexity of state laws. EDIT: Watched that again. Yes James is cheesy, kinda his shtick, but he's a real lawyer who defends real self-defense cases. Please give this a watch if you are armed. This was a close one, could have gone either way.

I am not aware of any state in the Union that prohibits one from shooting an unidentified, no uniform, no police lights, masked man threatening another person with a gun.

If you're going to carry, you must read the actual law for your state. You must be aware of how cases in your state have played out. And you must be ready to die or end up in a concrete and steel box, for life, if you pull your weapon.

Would you like to know more? Check Massad Ayoub on YouTube. He strikes me as conservative\non-MAGA, but he keeps his mouth fucking shut on politics, just the facts ma'am. He was a cop for 30-years and has 300+ court cases under his belt as an expert witness in self-defense shootings. You could do worse than learn from him.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 4 days ago

As an alternative for those that don't want to step up their anti-fash self-defense SoP, may I suggest keeping an empty soda bottle (or similar capped container) handy somewhere in one's vehicle?

It takes a very short time indeed to fill said receptacle with your liquid of choice (water? wiper fluid? piss?) and apply it rapidly in volume to one or more chucklefucks' masks to stifle the airflow through the fabric and allow all bystander reporters to easily & legally log that red-faced & breathless porkmeat when Y'all Queso pull their own masks down to keep from waterboarding themselves...

(Note: You can dump, launch, or squeeze/squirt said liquid to achieve that effect, according to your container choice and personal preference for "safe distance" in the moment. Win. ✊🏼)

Besides, if they're fleeing from the sudden fear of being IDed by multiple phone cameras, they're that much less likely to notice the potato in their vehicle's exhaust, the slashed tires, the keyed markings in the paint that'll link the vehicle to the scene, etc.

Stay safe, neighbors. Stay informed. Stay together. ✊🏼

[–] hakunawazo@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

Beside all the bad patches, there was one where I chuckled.

[–] slaacaa@lemmy.world 15 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I honestly don’t understand how these masked fucks are not getting shot

[–] whome@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Would you shoot one? Probably not. I don't mean it as a diss towards you it's just not a thing one just does. You are either a psycho or very desperate if you can shoot someone and even though we all hate these people it's not sth one just does.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

or very desperate

With the way things are going...

[–] slaacaa@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I understand your point, but you and I probably also wouldn’t ~~steel~~ steal cars, embezzle money, or beat up people for drugs, yet these things are happening daily.

I bet plenty of people with an anger problem walk/drive around with (legal or illegal) guns, and some portion of them probably matches the skin colors that these thugs are targeting. How come not once has somebody got jumpy, when masked people attacked them or their friends? They look exactly like how fake police look like in movies, when they try to rob a rival drug gang.

I’m just surprised nobody shot one of them yet.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I would 100% advise against steeling a car. The DeLorean debacle is only one example of how fucking stupid an idea a steel car is. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I would be sent to RFK's "wellness farms" by these fuckers. I would gladly exchange the lives of ICE to secure my freedom.

[–] idealotus@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

I'd argue that's what they're looking for to justify even more military presence and push to lock down things. See the reaction to Charlie Kirk.

However, maybe "they" (ICE leaders) would escalate things even if it were just tires being slashed, not throats. In which case, there's nothing to lose.

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 17 points 5 days ago

This was one of the best displays of fuck Ice I've seen. Masked bandits kidnapping Innocents.

[–] ZephyrXero@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

It's a shame those pieces of shit didn't get curb stomped. I can't wait till it's time to start really fighting back. Kudos to those people for getting him out without needing to. But damn do those guys deserve some pain. I would not have been able to keep calm if I was witnessing that

[–] hkspowers@lemmy.today 8 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Just waiting for the day crowds of people like this start showing up in unmarked vans and kidnapping ICE right back. Just start swarming them and grabbing them into vans and see how they like it.

[–] unwarlikeExtortion@lemmy.ml 4 points 4 days ago

The best way to send those thugs home is for the crowd to act like a bunch of drill instructors screaming at them how fat and worthless they are.

[–] BigMacHole@sopuli.xyz 16 points 5 days ago

This is TERRIBLE! That people DIDNT let these Unidentified Men (MAYBE ICE!) take away this CLEARLY Very Dangerous Unarmed Overweight Man on the Verge of Tears who can't really Speak English! HES OBVIOUSLY A TERRORIST (the Man NOT the Unidentified Kidnappers!)!

Good fucking job!

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Conspiracy theorist in me says this was designed by ICE with the hope that the protesters would turn violent, giving Trump a legal excuse to send in the army.

I’m not in good physical shape, but I think I could have gotten handcuffs on that guy.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 12 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You're not wrong, but that dude was the epitome of a gravy seal too. It's a 50/50.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

Gravy seal… lol, I feel this
