As once a wise man said, "just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that they aren't after you." Oh wait that was Kurt Cobain, not a wise man.

I was already growing certain that we, the sensible majority, owe plenty of so-called crackpots a few apologies.

Oh no, you don't. Just like you shouldn't apologise for not using a broken clock, even if right twice a day.

Because being right is not enough - you need to be consistently right, and that's only going to happen if you keep yourself rational, unlike those crackpots. The "Mormon elder" was probably talking about chips as a sign of the beast, and believed in bullshit like Christ coming back; and the "ex-Army ranger" likely saw civilian society with a military "hunt or be hunted" mindset. (Perhaps the gf and actor deserve the apologies?)

What matters here are who, why, and how. And I think that most people in Lemmy know those three.

I'm at the acceptance stage. My online presence is limited to Lemmy, and one or two occasional comments on youtube.

Yes, I use Amazon, and online banking, and I already know my ssn was leaked, and probably my dna, etc. What can be done about it? Nada, aside from voting when given the chance.

So, fuck it, I keep to myself and avoid giving out solid information but I already know the government probably knows what color my underwear is

Agreed. I wonder how everyone else isn't paranoid

At a certain point you can just accept that you're being watched, people are plotting against your well-being, and also most of it is beyond your ability to control. So you focus on what you can at least pretend to control and move on with your life. So Google knows when I scratch my balls, and some future authoritarian will flag me for speaking out for progressive causes. I can't stop all of it, and I won't ruin my own mental health obsessing over it. I shrug and go on living.

How about making it so that Google doesn't know that and said authoritarian regime doesn't know who says what? It can certainly be done, and it won't upend your life either
