I think this is a few decades or a few centuries overdue.

Not that I’d ever do it but I mean, nothing actually distinguishes eating a dog from eating a chicken or a cow

Same. Dogs aren't at the top of my menu but if this is purely pushed by the "dogs are cute" brigade rather than addressing something about the conditions of the farmed animals, it feels a bit self-serving.

sadly true, but sadly I think people draw the line somewhere because dogs have human-like personalities. although I'm sure people who spend a lot of time with chickens or cows claim the same thing about them.

I've had chickens for many years, and can confirm this. They have vastly different personalities - some are curious and affectionate, some are shy and much more private. Some are shockingly smart, some are dumb as shit.

Some, you form a bond with. They become pets, friends even. I'm upset for days when they pass. Others - well, at least I've given them a good life; I have no issue eating them.

The lines are completely arbitrary. It's not fair - it's human nature

This is asinine. Dogs are far more intelligent, loyal, and affectionate than chickens. To argue otherwise is intellectual dishonesty.

If you want to compare them with pigs, however, then perhaps you do have some point. This said, dog's tend to be extremely useful to humans. They do everything from herding and protecting livestock to guiding the blind and serving as lifelong companions. Most notably, perhaps, they have been our own prorectors for thousands of years. From the town watch dogs of old to the house dog of today.

For these reasons, and many others, the idea of eating them is quite crass to many.
