Jon Stewart is the Millennial Walter Cronkite.

[-] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 12 points 10 months ago

I just wish he'd have gotten into politics.

But I cant blame him after the hit job Al Franken got for being a progressive outsider.

[-] Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social 11 points 10 months ago

I don't. His talents would have been wasted on them. He can do a lot more with his fame outside of the restrictive nonsense that politics brings.

Al Franken had a conscience. When called on his mysoginy, he did the honorable thing and resigned. Sadly there are no more politicians like him.

You have zero idea what happened apparently....

[-] Cold_Brew_Enema@lemmy.world 18 points 10 months ago

Fuck yeah, man. He was the best

[-] rdyoung@lemmy.world 15 points 10 months ago

I've had major respect for him since he was on crossfire way back in the day. He took those guys to school and then beat them (verbally) like a rented mule. Crossfire went off the air shortly after his appearance. If you have never seen that episode do yourself a favor and go watch it.

And the painful thing is that all that dressdown, which should have ended careers, resulted in was to set Tucker Carlson on a path of becoming the face of the extreme right.

[-] fsxylo@sh.itjust.works 3 points 10 months ago

His face looks like he forgot how to drool.

I really hope he changes his mind and runs for office at some point. I'd vote for him for president.

And shit. I just realized where this was posted. This isn't related to trek at all but why the fuck not.

Come to Quark's, Quark's is fun!

I'm not really a bar kind of guy but if there was a quarks type place near me I might hang out there. There are a couple of "barcades" in my city and at least one of them has some punk and other rock shows on the regular, I keep meaning to take the time and check them out.

[-] Cold_Brew_Enema@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago

Same. That clip is gold. Made tucker Carlson look like a total moron

[-] fsxylo@sh.itjust.works 2 points 10 months ago

You don't see him wearing a bowtie much anymore.

Watching The Colbert Report and Daily Show in the 2000s was something I always looked forward to each night. It'll be nice to have Jon back, if only once a week.

[-] oocdc2@kbin.social 12 points 10 months ago

"The Problem with Jon Stewart" should have a high school or college course structured around it--it was a great series.

[-] Corgana@startrek.website 13 points 10 months ago

Yes, a shame how it ended. I respect Jon for sticking to his principles.

[-] not_exactly@feddit.de 12 points 10 months ago

This is awesome! Love to have Jon Stewart back, and I also love to see the correspondents take over the host role more often.

[-] autotldr 1 points 10 months ago

This is the best summary I could come up with:

For the remainder of the week, the Comedy Central series will rely on a team of correspondents, which are likely to include Jordan Klepper, Desi Lydic, Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta and Dulcé Sloan.

“Jon Stewart is the voice of our generation, and we are honored to have him return to Comedy Central’s The Daily Show to help us all make sense of the insanity and division roiling the country as we enter the election season,” said Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios.

In an interview with THR at the time, McCarthy said he’d been blown away by both the linear tune-in — up 13 percent year-over-year — and the social excitement around the procession of hosts, which included Kal Penn, Leslie Jones, Chelsea Handler, Hasan Minhaj and Sarah Silverman.

In fact, the former correspondent’s deal to take over as Noah’s replacement was all but done by late summer, when The New Yorker published an article alleging that he had exaggerated and, in some cases, made up autobiographical details of his comedy.

(The comic later released a 20-minute video, via THR, where he fact-checked the New Yorker story, which he called “so needlessly misleading.”) The host search, it seemed, would continue, albeit after the SAG strike concluded.

He told NPR that his decision was based on the demands of the correspondent’s role on his schedule, as well as a disinterest in continuing in the position while “waiting for someone else to take the top job.” (His photo and bio remain on the Comedy Central site.)

The original article contains 1,437 words, the summary contains 257 words. Saved 82%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!

It's kind of a shame that Taylor Tomlinson didn't get a shot at this instead of...whatever the terrible show she just started is.

[-] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

@midnight was amazing...

I tried her knockoff show "after midnight" and it was terrible.

[-] UnderBoob@lemmy.world 0 points 10 months ago

Lmao at the people down voting. Her new show is garbage, who the hell green lit this piece of shit colostomy bag of random segments brought together.

Hell yes, I was never a fan of Trevor Noah personally.

General off-topic chat for the crew of startrek.website. Trek-adjacent discussions, other sci-fi television, navigating the Fediverse, server meta (within reason), selling expired cases of Yamok sauce, it’s all fair game.
