Some people were asking for a private SMS app, and I thought about Silence, which development had stopped, but there appears to be something new : https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.afkanerd.deku/

With things like Signal, or Matrix, and other more secure alternatives to SMS/MMS I don't know one would choose to use something like Deku or Silence.

Didn't Signal discontinue sms support? Or did that not happen ever since they talked about it. I never checked.

For the SMS perhaps? I use matrix, signal and other things. I still ain't got rid of SMS completely. But sure adaptation is a problem

It's the same story as with PGP encrypted mail. It has existed for decades, is easy to use, but barely anyone does. It's nice that encrypted sms exists but what's the point if 99.999% don't care.

Yea it was great when signal had it built in to use insecure SMS. Easy to switch my parents to use signal since everything was there. They where not happy when signal stopped supporting it

Yes, sure thing, I can imagine that, with millions of people using WhatsApp, Signal and what not. I can also imagine that not everyone on the planet has a smart phone and Internet access yet, due to poverty or other reasons. And in the Western world there are likely still elderly people who have never even touched a smart phone and have a dumb phone. This new app could be useful for people who still want to use 2G with dumb phones.

It works with 2G, sure, but I'm not sure how it would work on dumb phones: how messages would be decrypted or encrypted on a dumb phone, without that app?

Ah, yes, good one. (I feel dumb now, time to catch some sleep) ๐Ÿ‘
