It looks like a lot of campgrounds, Audubon nature reserves, state parks, and the only major city is Providence which is museums and food.

It's more mental than physical.

Almost all cut, but there is still so much splitting to do.

Are you coming back to RI?

[-] favrion@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

No, it was a day trip and my job starts up again on Tuesday.

The closest that I got was axe throwing.

Throw a rock from one side of the state to the other, can probably make it in one good throw

The Breakers - this is the Rockefeller’s summer home in Newport. It’s open for tours, and though I don’t recall the prices being crazy, it’s definitely been a while.

It’s so ostentatious and over the top, but beautiful, and full of wonderfully made things.

I think it’s interesting to consider our modern billionaire class as equivalents to Rockefeller’s gilded age.

Oh, and while you’re in RI make sure to get a Del’s frozen lemonade.

Go to North Kingstown beach and set up camp in front of this guy's place

Try to prove it's actually an island

If you can work it out in your schedule, the Waterfires in Providence are great.

If not, Spikes Junkyard Dogs is amazing. I ate there all the time when I went to uni.

Also Newport is further away but they have brilliant sights.

Or Point Judith.

Sept 9th and 30th are full lightings, and are wonderful

Sad there is only one Spike’s left

That's a shame! I remember when I went to Johnson & Wales, I used to walk down to the one near Pine Street (I think)

If you only have one day, and it’s open, I would recommend visiting Rhode Island School of Design’s museum and campus. The RISD museum was surprisingly nice. Small but uncrowded - it was the type of place I could bring a sketch pad and draw for hours. There are probably other museums and attractions nearby, along with nice places to eat and drink. I don’t know much about outside of Providence though.

Rhode Island School of Design is one of the top art schools in the US. They have an art museum on campus that houses pieces like you’d find at actual city museums plus works by their students. https://www.risd.edu/

I missed the mark on going there, but it would have been cool.

Newport has some interesting shopping. Get some stuffies (stuffed quahog clams) if you like seafood. They should be eaten with a squeeze of lemon and the cheapest vinegar and cayenne hotsauce you can find.

[-] anon6789@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

Came here to say stuffies. There is also Rhode Island clam chowder. All the other seafood was good too. Stopped at a public house that had free oysters that changed my mind about raw oysters.

The Breakers mansion tour was also cool.

HP Lovecraft's grave is there. I enjoyed looking around Providence at night thinking about it as part of his fictional universe.

I went to the Roger Williams Zoo.

There is a vampire grave people leave stuff at.

Also went to some museums and Block Island, but they just had a fire so that may be closed or difficult to get to right now.

Just wait a minute.. Quahog is real?

Do you know the Griffins?

[-] SunriseParabellum@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago

Take a selfie of yourself and the entire state of Rhode Island in the background. You may need a small box or a selfie stick or something tho.

If you end up in Newport and you're up for a little outdoorsy activity, the cliff walk is very nice and has great views of the coast: https://www.discovernewport.org/things-to-do/cliff-walk/

Theres a killer arcade called Freeplay in Providence. One fee <$10 to get in and all the games are set to free play. Great pinball selection if you're into that. Cheap beer and okish food while you're there. 21+ most days.

[-] favrion@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

To clarify: only Saturday.

[-] BrainisfineIthink@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

Go to Woonsocket and see a movie at the drive in!

[-] Mr_Blott@feddit.uk 1 points 1 year ago

Only thing I know about Rhode Island is that they made chickens there

Hope this helps!
