Supposedly this following message (translated) was accompanying the most recent post:

"Hello fellow FB! The crew of the large landing craft "Caesar Kunikov" repelled the attack of the BECs with all available forces and means, the battle lasted 20 minutes. Of the 10 BECs, 4 were destroyed. The 5th BEC hit the Central Committee BDK in the stern, thereby immobilizing the ship, after which 6,7,8,9, BECs in turn, hit the BDK on the port side in the midship area (middle) and closer to the stern, with the purpose of capsizing the vessel (from the entry of a large amount of water from one side). The 9th BEC partially entered the hole made by the previous BEC and detonated almost inside. The BDK could no longer be saved (the list was rapidly increasing, the ship was lying on the left side). From the moment the enemy BECs were discovered and the start of the battle, until the BDK was completely flooded, a little more than 40 minutes passed. The crew of the BDK left the ship on life rafts, without loss of personnel, and evacuated all secret documentation and part of the secret equipment with weapons. The last 10th BEC conducted observation (recording) of the dying ship until the sinking, after which the 10th BEC tried to attack the tug accompanying the BDK Caesar Kunikov, but was destroyed by the PDSS group on board."

"At the moment, the crew are being made into cowards and scoundrels. I have removed the sound from the video, but I am sure that the command has it in full. There is a fight there, according to the best behests of our grandfathers.

Personally, I saw the clear work of the team working until the last minute. The crew, I think, at a minimum, deserves not to be made into villains."

They definitely made an effort there. I think they should at least be given a participation trophy.

Russian sailors: Can we get CIWS to counter USV?

Russian Naval command: No, we have CIWS at home

The CIWS at home:

The weird thing is this landing ship actually has a proper CIWS, a pair of AK-630 CIWS turrets, but I have not seen them used in any of these drone attack videos. I wouldn't be surprised if they were non-functional, like many of the armaments on the Moskva, the (sunk) Black Sea Fleet's flagship.

Depression-Elevation

+88° ... -12° (50°/sec)

+90° ... -25° (60°/sec) AK-630M-2

Might be the answer there, shooting surface vessels was likely outside the design requirements. Sea ‘skimming’ ASMs still fly tens of meters above sea level to avoid wave swell.

Hence the doubling of depression angle on the v2, but knowing Russian modernization I doubt many ships have that upgrade - yet, or ever tbh the way naval denial is shaking out. Why play the sunk cost game of naval force protection when a five to six figure suicide drone or ASM can knock out your multi-million surface combatants?

[-] Dhar@lemmy.ca 3 points 8 months ago

"sunk cost" 🤭

[-] HappycamperNZ@lemmy.world 9 points 8 months ago

I mean, fuck Russia but that was a pretty epic watch

You gotta feel for anyone whose job on your billion-ruble warship is to be the man-portable CIWS.

While Russia is losing warships because they don't have enough close-range deck weaponry with the ability to throw enough lead downrange, some rando's project in the US being used to shoot at little UAVs for fun:

EDIT:

https://www.twz.com/sea/russian-ship-under-drone-boat-attack-seen-in-dramatic-onboard-video

Generally, the close-in weapon systems on some of the Russian vessels that have been attacked appear to be less than effective against these novel threats.

Pithy.

Why do the drone boats weave and loop around so much? Seems like they're lingering in the "shoot me" zone.

Edit: could it be that they want to draw fire to themselves so other boats can move in instead?

[-] ChocoboRocket@lemmy.world 27 points 8 months ago

I base this on absolutely 0 military experience BUT

Could be a distraction vessel to draw fire

Could be to give Russia a chance to use countermeasures and evaluate their effectiveness + come up with next Gen drone to mitigate current countermeasures

Could be that it is impossible to get a good video from a drone bouncing around in the water and they wanted to make contact with areas that ensure sinking

Could be a test to see how much punishment the drones can take while maintaining combat effectiveness

Could be that it's pure chaos and neither side has a great strategy aside from do/do no explode if possible

Either way, this footage is wild! Give em hell Ukraine!!

Apparently there is a 3 second lag too, so I bet it's better to turn (left, right, left right) than going straight with that kind of lag if you don't have a clear idea where you want to go.

Also the drone boats have different objectives, so if there us a filming-boat, it seems logic it'd turn a lot.

Armchair general Valmond ar your service.

[-] datendefekt@lemmy.ml 3 points 8 months ago

Wow if it's really that high, then organizing an attack with 10 drones is extremely impressive!

I'd have hoped that the lag would be lower, because Starlink has a lower orbit than geosync satellites. My hunch would've been 100ms one way, for a complete round-trip delay of 0.5s at most.

[-] Opafi@feddit.de 1 points 8 months ago

I'd bet that after starlink was disabled once mid operation, they'd rather eat a donkey's dick than rely on Musk's ass again.

[-] Hubi@feddit.de 11 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

I imagine a bunch of drones zig-zagging around your ship in the middle of the night are much less predictable and harder to hit than if they are coming at you fast but in a straight line. You are bound to lose track of one of them in the chaos. There's also less of a risk that the drones blow each other up when one gets inevitably hit. Plus, there's probably a significant delay in the controls on top of the difficulty of steering an unstable watercraft like this.

[-] HappycamperNZ@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

Because watching that trigger a primal fear in me.

Fuck... that....

[-] Badeendje@lemmy.world 14 points 8 months ago

So small arms seem ineffective. These 2 minutes are then best used to strap on your lifejacket and make your way to the lifeboat.

[-] NegativeLookBehind@lemmy.world 9 points 8 months ago

Do Russian naval ships even have life jackets/boats? That seems counterintuitive to their normal “you’re dying here, one way or another” approach.
