Former President Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty in the sprawling Fulton County election interference case, according to a new court filing.

Trump had been scheduled to be arraigned in person on Wednesday. Georgia law allows criminal defendants to waive their in-person appearance and enter a formal plea through court filings.

His arraignment marks the fourth time that Trump has pleaded not guilty to criminal charges since leaving the presidency. In this case, Trump is charged with racketeering in his alleged efforts to upend the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia.

Lies on both accounts! He’s going to prison!

[-] SauceBossSmokin@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Just the recorded call is enough evidence. And that's like the most we know from what the prosecutors have. So yeah, fingers crossed the MF lives long enough to be poor paying lawyers and get a huge sentence.

The government (State or Fed) never goes after anyone of this magnitude unless it's a Darryl Dawkins type slam dunk.

Meh, even if the stress kills him before he sees his day in court, I'll be okay with it. Anything to get DeSatan on the ballot is fine by me. Cause once that happens Biden is all but guaranteed a second term.

[-] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

I'm not surprised this is non article. Let me know when he found guilty.

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.one 4 points 1 year ago

No trial date for Georgia yet, that will be next once everyone pleads and has their "I wanna be in federal court!" requests denied.

[-] skellener@kbin.social 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

First Georgia trial is in October this year.

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.one 5 points 1 year ago

Yeah, but that's JUST for Chesebro and only because he requested an expedited trial.

"Speedy trial" requests have to start before 11/3 or be thrown out. Sidney Powell has requested one as well and Willis has requested hers be rolled in with Chesebro.

Willis is actually willing to do ALL of them starting 10/23, but we're waiting on the judges ruling.

I love how she called their bluff on that one.

Chucklefucks: "(If we tell them we want a speedy trial, they won't be prepared.) WE WANT A SPEEDY TRIAL!"

Fani Willis: "Let's do this."

[-] Treczoks@lemm.ee 11 points 1 year ago

As expected, he lied.

[-] PseudoSpock@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 year ago

It's sad that one's plea isn't under oath...

[-] LastYearsPumpkin@feddit.ch 11 points 1 year ago

Hell no. You absolutely shouldn't get to punish a citizen for putting up a defense.

Even someone who 100% committed the crime they are accused of should be able to zealously defend themselves, including pleading not guilty. The state already has too much power in prosecuting people.

Yes, Trump deserves the full force of law applied against him, but let's not give the state even more ammo against the average citizen.

[-] PseudoSpock@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 1 year ago

Now now, think about it.

Long story short, if your plea is a lie, it should be an additional charge to keep you locked away longer. Helps disincentivize people pleading not guilty when they know they can't beat the charge and wasting everyone's time and money. Encourages plea deals.

[-] LastYearsPumpkin@feddit.ch 3 points 1 year ago

Ok, you're a troll, I get it. But for everyone else reading this - There's already PLENTY of incentive to plea out. Too much incentive.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/walterpavlo/2018/07/31/are-innocent-people-pleading-guilty-a-new-report-says-yes/

This is just one story, go ahead and do a search and you'll find PLENTY more - how many stories can you find just in your local paper for someone who's been in jail for 10 years before they're released with not much more than a "sorry about that, tough luck, buddy."

Cops already lie to defendants and say "we know you did it, we have 7 witnesses and DNA evidence. Just plea out and take a year of jail, or go to trial and get 20 years." The defendant has no cash for bail, has no way of getting a good lawyer, so they have a public defender. Now they ALSO have an extra "oh, and if you say you're not guilty at pre-trial, we'll add another 10 years for perjury. Good luck, sucker!"

Sure, you might think it's a good thing to lock up more people, but innocent people get locked up ALL THE TIME. Including innocent people coerced into confessing to crimes they didn't commit. You personally could very easily be one of those people someday, even if you never break the law (which itself is almost impossible.)

Finally - here's a very famous historical YouTube video explaining EXACTLY how you can get railroaded into prison without doing anything wrong - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-7o9xYp7eE

Here is an alternative Piped link(s): https://piped.video/watch?v=d-7o9xYp7eE

Piped is a privacy-respecting open-source alternative frontend to YouTube.

I'm open-source, check me out at GitHub.

[-] Neato@kbin.social 8 points 1 year ago

That would just mean anytime the state finds someone guilty they get to tack on an additional perjury charge. Pointlessly harmful.

[-] PseudoSpock@lemmy.dbzer0.com -3 points 1 year ago

Allow me to correct you there... Wonderfully harmful!
