MAJOR ORDER: Helldivers, it's time to choose between liberating Choohe or Penta. Depending on your choice, you will receive either the MD-17 Anti-Tank Mines or the RL-77 Airburst Rocket Launcher.

(And you'll save the citizens. Don't forget the citizens.)

Major Order Briefing Video

Edit: Each planet has the stratagem associated with it as an Environmental Condition so we can test them out!

Okay this is probably a fucking stupid Noob question from a stupid noob but.. is helldivers a video game where everybody in the world is playing the same objectives and trying to smash the goals together? At the same time? In real time?

[-] StoneyDcrew@lemmy.world 25 points 6 months ago

So the missions themselves are their own instance, were 1-4 people are given a set of objectives and they try to complete them then extract.

Outside the missions there are several planets controlled by various factions. The helldivers select the missions they want to do here and what planet it is on.

Once they complete a mission the success gets added to the community "score" of that planet, and once the community contributes enough missions the planet is taken (or successfully defended).

This way the community can come together and chose which planets to attack in the war.

Sometimes we are given a "major order" which is an objective to aim for in regards to what planet to attack, if theses are completed we are normally rewarded with something.

That's fucking Wild loool

There is one major order going on at a time, and yes everyone has the ability to contribute to it. There are a lot of other personal things going on too, but the mission selection encourages contributing to the major order.

Eveyone gets the rewards for the major order if it is successful, and most of them have been. You can also see player counts by planet, you see other ships in orbit with you, and see more.if there are other players doing missions nearby, and other things that make the game feel large and connected. The actual gameplay is up to four players on a map at a time.

The jingoist propaganda style is also over the top and clearly inspired by Starship Troopers. There are a fair number of annoying bugs, but not enough to slow down me or my friends.

At least you're doing your part!

[-] PhineaZ@feddit.de 9 points 6 months ago

Somewhat. Everyone contributes to the same goal (or doesn't contribute) by playing missions. The missions themselves are 1-4 players Co-op (with intense amount of "co-op" aka friendly fire)

[-] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago

Yeah. You have your own goals of course, but honestly you don't really matter in the grand scheme of things. We're all working together towards major goals in this war.

Real heroes pick AT-Mines to maximise war crimes - also, it rhymes

[-] iegod@lemm.ee 10 points 6 months ago

We've got too many rockets. More mines please.

[-] Chozo@fedia.io 8 points 6 months ago

The mines look like they'd be really good at dealing with enemy reinforcement calls (apparently they also make very quick work of factory striders), but I feel like the rockets will offer more frequent utility overall. Really tough call, to be honest.

The rockets would be the clear choice if they weren't another backpack strat. 🤦🏽‍♂️

[-] tooclose104@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 months ago

They look kinda cool but are definitely meant to deal with swarms. They do slap pretty hard though. Haven't tried it on a heavy yet though, it killed too many friendlies on my first run with it this morning.

I'd fired one off and instead of going towards the enemy it triggered the cluster in my face and the faces of my fellow Helldivers who were near me... 😵

[-] littlebluespark@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

Sounds like my debut run with the laser "guard" dog that immediately killed the two randos in my squad, then a few roaches rushing me (that I was about to shoot, if it weren't for the shouting in my ears), and then just hovered there, oblivious and/or smug. 🤦🏽‍♂️

[-] tooclose104@lemmy.ca 6 points 6 months ago

Please not airburst. It's another backpack support weapon. And it's indiscriminately spicy. I had one go off the second it cleared the launcher with no baddies around I could see and took out myself and 2 other squaddies.

They're launcher discharged cluster munitions with a slappy trigger mechanism.

[-] Oddbin@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Yeah, having tried them they are very, very much a cluster munition. Also it seems so far everyone has learned the range of said cluster munitions in pretty much the same way. Weird it think AT Landmines would have a lower Teamkill potential and I say this as someone who today, told my new playing friend to watch out for the bot mines and promptly stepped on one.

[-] tooclose104@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 months ago

I just did a solo on easy to really get a better feel for the rocket. Still killed myself 2.5 times with it.. also, I don't suggest using it against drop ships, the range of the cluster gets huge lol it did not take out any of the 3 devastaters I fired it at either

[-] Badeendje@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

Our experience exactly. After extracting I was short 10 on my kill count ... All squaddies.
