Why didn't it start with an offline mode?
That's not how live services run
Release window I assume
They were working on this before they knew their fate
Entire marketing and sales team typing furiously...
If I had free reign over the law I'd make it mandatory for 'live service' games to add a offline mode before the servers shut down
I would force the companies to submit all source code and art assets to the library of Congress so when the game eventually goes public domain, it's recoverable. I would also return Copyright to it's original 25 year limit
You’re right!
But conservatives in the uk don’t want to interfere with the free market🤪
Nice to see at least one company doing it. I'm hoping this announcement comes for Helldivers 2 before it shuts down. It's the only way I'll buy it
Helldivers 2 is not shutting down anytime soon and I doubt they'll offer an offline mode in the near future. If you're not playing the major orders and watching the direction of the game in real time you're going to miss out on a lot of the story and the lore. That's how live games work. There isn't a story mode or anything resembling it. Sony got wrapped up in a bunch of controversy and it left a bad taste in everyone's mouth but AH has been trying to do what's right. They sold 12,000,000 copies and on an average Tuesday there's 150,000 players playing at any time. I get the hate for having to be connected to the Internet to play a game but that's kind of the schtick for Helldivers whether you're into or not.
My reluctance to buy is only augmented by the recent Sony BS. I like the look of the gameplay loop and don't doubt I'd get some enjoyment out of playing it with friends but it's an online-only game and I refuse to buy a game that, without explicit promises, will vanish into the void one day. That's not a purchase in my eyes and never will be, it's an undisclosed rental.
What I'm trying to say is IMO an offline version wouldn't be worth playing. The shared victories and failures can't be simulated and that's the nature of this kind of video game. There's been a lot of similar games so I understand the reluctance to join in but the comradery they've built through PvE is really something.
And what I'm saying I'm not necessarily advocating for an offline mode. Self-hosting a server is a perfectly valid option in my eyes. That way one can play essentially offline but also for friends to play privately or people to simply host for randos if they wanted. This is sold as a product and not a service, it's not one and done and I think it's inexcusable to be giving a corporation an excuse to take away something someone has bought simply because of the framing.
Again I think you're missing the point. I would argue it is a product and a service. They are hosting us on their servers but they're also playing dungeon master. If you just want a shooter where you shoot bugs they have them but Helldiver's is more than that. You couldn't come close to emulating what the game accomplishes on a self hosted server with you and your friends. The point is you're playing with randos that you have to rely on to do their part so that you don't die and to complete the major orders.
1 last hurrah.
It may not be the most flattering to be remembered by, but their work will survive, and that is respectable.
I was worried that the sudden shutdown meant they wouldn't release the offline mode. Glad I was wrong.
