Actual question: why in the fuck can the US veto actions by the UN? Can other countries veto as well? Or is it only the US that can do that with the implied threat we’d swing our militaristic dick around or something?

EDIT: Thank y’all for replying and informing me and any other readers about why this is a thing. You guys are da real MVPs 👊

It seems weird that a good chunk of Americans don’t seem to know how some of the rights work.

Freedom of speech and freedom of religion are there to basically protect you from the government from going “hey, you can’t say that” or “hey, you can’t believe in that”. It doesn’t absolve people of facing the consequences of their choices, including spewing hate speech if they’re that kind of person. If I said “Hitler was right”, only the government can’t do anything outside of what they can already do with hate speech - but that doesn’t mean I won’t rightfully get a few teeth loose or getting shunned by people around me for saying dumb shit like that.

Strangely, I found this to be evident about some federal laws we take for granted, like minimum wage. People legit think minimum wage is meant for people starting out and not giving out money to them (which makes no sense to me) and argue when they find out the original reason it was even made was so the nuclear family could afford a home, food, and goods and services for themselves and was calculated as how they can do that with one person working a job.

Oh wow, you mean to tell me that between paying disgustingly high rent, car payments, car insurance, gas, increasing food prices for less food than before, and having buying power that is stagnant at best and shrinking in most cases due to inflation, it’s hard to be financially stable?

Next thing you know, that article will tell me water is wet.

It’s because Christianity (and by nature, offshoots of it) was, and still is, a means of control.

Let’s not forget the roots of Christianity was from when it was a literal cult; you were considered a part of the Christian Cult if you practiced Christianity before iirc either Theodosius or Constantine became the Roman Emperor and made it into the state religion. Christmas was also stolen from Sol Invictus as a means to help bridge the transition into Christianity.

Because this only harms the ones who aren’t corrupt and doesn’t do anything for the ones who are corrupt.

What they should be doing is getting rid of lobbying and disallowing corporate and business interests in politics, but we fucked that up decades ago, so I’ll settle for forcing politicians to wear tracksuits that have patches from every single person and company that had paid them.

Because all the rest of the comments are being super helpful, here’s the rundown for those not terminally online.

Another YouTube channel, Gamer’s Nexus, made this video talking about the inaccuracies in LTT’s lab data which also mentions a huuuuuge faux pas by LTT auctioning off a prototype model of a product from a company that only has that prototype. LTT also dunked hard on that prototype due to improper testing parameters that the company said that the product is not rated for. Some serious workspace allegations also came up around this time from a former LTT employee, but there’s no hard evidence.

Guys, he’s demonstrating gun safety the same way Detective Raphaël Ambrosius Costeau from Disco Elysium shows it. Minus the “blowing out your own brains” bit.

This is the mindset people should be having. Reddit is gonna be fine regardless of all this, and time will only tell if the Fediverse becomes big enough to be a competitor as a social media platform.

Truthfully, I was on the fence of leaving Reddit because of how much I didn’t like the hivemind there on the majority of subs. I still go on there for my niche and specific communities that aren’t on the Fediverse, but I pretty much just lurk there once every so often instead of actively participate - I instead actively participate on the Fediverse because the community is genuinely waaaaaay better than Reddit’s community ever was, even with the FOSS app gatekeepers here.
