Amazing to see Hot Wheels change from gas to hybrid to EV over the years.

Nice, glad to help! And cool that you did Linguistics in school!

I'm not sure about the specifics, but the core I can agree with, that is: 'people speaking the same language, but with vastly different backgrounds, will have difficulty communicating effectively.'

It is surprising that the presidential Democratic candidate finally lost a popular vote after 20+ years, but currently it appears that she just lost. Sure, do a recount of a sample of suspected precincts. I am going to continue to believe that this is a conspiracy theory until substantiated evidence of fraud is provided.

As an aside, those images are small and I could barely read them (zooming didn't increase image size).

I'll check out the documentary, and thanks for your reply.

I agree, my working conclusion for a while has been that I can't compete with the phone and to focus on my wellbeing by reducing contact.

Have you learned anything useful on inoculation and deprogramming? I’ve been looking as well but haven’t found much.

Is it like you say, have a true set of idea anchors? But still what if it’s a false anchor?

Second this. Vanlife stuff is focused on size, mass, durability, efficiency, replaceability, repairability, modularity, price. There is nothing better than vanlife videos for learning how to live minimally within an apartment.

Some additional tips,

  • folding furniture.
  • Human baseline happiness returns to set points. Remove something non-essential and you may be sad at first, but will eventually stop caring.
  • No couch or TV: if it cant fit on/in my car or is fragile, I’m not buying it.
  • if you don’t mind appearing “poor”, you may realize that the products that best fit all the above criteria are just basic things from walmart, target, etc. Those folding plastic tables and metal bed frames, plastic tubs and drawers, actually solve their problems 90% as well as traditional products at 10% the price, while being readily available everywhere. You don’t worry about damaging them either.
  • take or leave advice. Maybe you want a nice desk. I have a nice office chair. It will be hard to move, but it’s worth it. The point is you can be minimal in unimportant areas.

Accelerationism is one of the dumbest ideas I’ve ever heard of.

Always get the version of the gadget with replaceable batteries unless you want a brick in 3-10 years. Additionally, prefer 18650, AA, AAA batteries, and keep some rechargeable ones around.

My favorite was the password set screen allowing up to 64 characters, but login fails if the password is over 32 chars.

I'd like to store/seed important data (wikipedia, gutenberg, etc.), and read recently that it would be a good idea to store torrent files long-term. My questions are:

  1. Is it better to store torrent files or magnet links?
  2. Will a given magnet link retrieve the exact same .torrent file every initiation?
  3. Is storage of these files/links a good idea (especially if I have the files)?

This question is really about whether magnet links or torrent files are better to store long term, with a sanity check that this is something that should be done.

I've read these two StackExchange posts which were very helpful, and am looking to get more technical opinions and info:

To help with this in the future, you can also create several fake results sharing your real name. Stuff like a blogger with one post not in your writing style, etc.. This will dilute searches with disinformation. Removal of real data is important, but you can also confuse anyone looking.

Hey folks! I've been using MarkText for years, but it seems dead now. It still works fine, but I've been on-and-off looking for something that gets dependency updates and is less resource heavy (electron).

I look for the following in order of importance:

  • FLOSS license
  • WYSIWYG editing, not side-by-side
  • limited scope (edit docs, not trying to be 'A System for Managing Ideas')
  • low resource usage
  • LaTeX support is a plus

Do you know if MarkText has a trustworthy fork that is maintained? Do you know if something with similar user experience exists that uses a more lightweight code base?

I think that being informed can help dilute the worry. Here’s what I’ve learned:

Most microplastics found inside humans come from synthetic clothing followed by car tires. Theres a great Veritasium video on this. Plastic cookware is also a consideration.

Food & Cookware

Don’t buy dishwasher pods, they're worse for the environment (plastic waste) and worse for your wallet than just a regular fluid container. Both fluid container and pod container are plastic so theres not much improvement to be had there.

My friend with a Chemical Engineering degree tells me that the plastics are stable chemically, and insufficient evidence exists to deem them harmful when left alone in cool temperatures. HOWEVER, unreacted precursor chemicals and thermosets are highly reactive, and new plastics come still coated with this. New car smell? Thats unreacted precursor, and it’s very harmful. Additionally, plastic cookware also gets hot, breaking it down slowly, and potentially making it harmful.

Avoid plastics and “non-stick” coatings in cookware.

Clothing

First thought is to avoid synthetic clothing, but theres a catch… Synthetic clothing is significantly better at blocking harmful UV light from the sun. For example, polyester & Nylon UPF is about 30-50+, whereas cotton is around 5. UPF = SPF generally. For this, I prefer wool (UPF ~40) or denim (UPF 1000+ off the chart). However, thats hot, so using some tight knit polyester shirts is a must in warm climates. Many shirts from retailers like REI have this stuff. So far, the ones I own have never shed noticeably, though that may change.

Why am I talking about sun protection? Remember, the goal is your health, not fearful avoidance of one harm that subjects you to another.

For all fabrics that aren't expected to protect from the sun, natural fibers are preferred. Included is bedding, towels, bathrobe, pajamas, casual clothing, socks, etc.

Other thoughts

For all of this, my friend says that I probably don't need to worry, and I have never seen convincing evidence that microplastics are harmful inside the body. Yet, I operate as if it were proven, because I don't want to risk reading that I’ve been poisoning myself ten years from now.
