Just another example demonstrating that cultural references don't age well.
I thought he was about to jump cause he didn't like what he saw in himself.

So not at all based in science? Interesting as a historical curiosity but nothing more?
Did they actually issue a subpoena though, or did they just send some emails saying "give pls".
A subpoena is a legal document and thus there are rules that go along with it. But an email asking to be given something is not a subpoena.
It's interesting, because the idea is basically that knowledge and ideas should be constructive, so as not to pollute the sum of human knowledge.
So that raises the question, what is the constructive conclusion to "memetic effluent"? Without one, is the concept itself an example of such effluent?
That sign won't stop me because I can't read!
Or
If those kids could read they'd be very upset.
They're fucking horrible. Full page popups.
there is no point in doing it yourself from scratch.
Learning. The point is to learn.
You don't have to learn everything that way, but you understand things a lot better when you've built them from scratch, and that underlying foundation enhances the entire knowledge stack.
UBI is supposed to replace other need-based social programs such as disability, welfare programs, government housing, etc. The entire point is that the money from those programs, which collectively have quite a lot of waste, goes into UBI so everyone can participate in society on a more fair level.
Also read the reply to that comment for an example of the waste: https://lemmy.world/comment/4589897
There's basically an entire industry dedicated to denying and minimizing payouts. With UBI, that entire industry becomes obsolete.
If UBI is done properly, it replaces those other social programs. The payouts are bigger and for more people, and the program administration costs are smaller.
~~Corporations~~ Executives are always happy to pander to morality ... ~~Corporations~~ Executives are equally happy to make choices that most would consider immoral, if it meets their goals.
Remember there are actual people who are making these decisions. Don't let them hide behind some abstract legal concept, that's part of their play.
It's possible he did and just cared more about how it affected him than how it affected his family.
I'll be dealing with my dad's wife in the same way inside of 15 years, and it's not because he can't see how she is. He just likes her money more than he likes his own family, I guess.
Most towns are already built on flood plains because historically it was good farmland. Look at the Fraser Valley in BC. Nearly two million people all living on one big flood plain.
Look at the towns around you. Are they built in a wide, flat bottom valley? That's probably a flood plain. Every town I can think of around me is built in the valley bottom first, then only goes up the hills as development grows over time.
Don't let other people hold you back.
If you're trying to start a new hobby and you get put off by people giving you information because you think they're being condescending, learn to put aside the personal feelings so you can focus on the thing you wanted to focus on.
New information is useful regardless of how it was presented to you. You can't control how other people act, but you can control how you react to it. Learn to take the good and leave the bad.
