Probably my favourite VOY episode. I love how much fun the actors seemed to be having when the got to chew scenery.
Bashir has no idea how carts end up back at the cart return, and between O’Brien and Garak he isn’t likely to learn.
Now you're thinking like Vedek Bareil.
Hey, talk to Rom; he's the one who thinks that.
I think to say that Disco has nothing that contradicts established canon is overselling it a bit. But, I will say that all Trek has violated established canon at one point or another, up to and including TOS itself, which was created by people who had no idea at the time that anyone would even remember it some 57 years later, let alone be obsessed with all this minutiae.
If we ignore visual continuity -- which, as a life long comic book reader, I am more than happy to do -- Disco still has some few contradictions here and there, but I will say that it actually toes the line without crossing over it too frequently fairly well, allowing it to have some interesting and new approaches to Trek.
This is an entirely over the top interpretation of what is happening in the scene the OP shared where a villainous character is trying to exploit what they perceive to be a weakness in one of the protagonists.
However, if you want to get into it, the biggest factor in any tone shift from TOS to now was DS9. That’s where we see the Federation abandoning humanity to the whims of the Cardassians for the sake of a treaty. That’s where a Starfleet enforces martial law on Earth and an admiral attempts a coup of the Federation government. That’s where we learn it’s illegal to engage in genetic modification, even when it would reverse a person’s intellectual disability. And, of course, DS9 introduced the concept of Section 31.
The seeds were always there, though. Even in TOS we learn that the governor of the colony Kirk grew up on had half the population executed because there was a famine and not enough food for everyone. We see a Federation professor who taught at the Academy introduce fascism to a planet because he believed it to be the most efficient philosophy for advancement. We see a planet that’s heavily implied Starfleet maintains a base there strictly for sex tourism, and we hear Federation delegates debate the issue of whether or not they should allow a planet whose resources they’ve been exploiting to even join the Federation. Kirk and the Klingons fight a proxy war using the native population of a pre-warp world before Kirk gets sad and just abandons his side. It’s even heavily implied that women cannot rise to the rank of captain in Starfleet.
The only Trek that resembles your interpretation is TNG, but even there we learn of human colonies with roving “rape gangs” like the world Tasha Yar grew up on.
This is silly.
Worf doesn’t worry about that.
I can tell from your shoes that you're a person of refinement and affluence.
More time for Legos!
I think Number One is supposed to be Pike's friend and confidant, similar to Sisko and Dax's relationship in DS9.
Who else is he going to confide in on this matter. Spock giving Pike relationship advice would be pretty wack.
Spock: Captain, I could not help but notice that the USS Cayuga warped away sooner than expected given your relationship with Captain Batel. The crew assumed you would want some "alone time" as ensign Uhura put it. I will not repeat what lieutenant Ortegas said.
Pike: Wait, you guys talk about my love life on the bridge?
Spock: Indeed. It is a matter of some interest.
Pike: Okay, I'm not exactly comfortable with that.
Spock: Captain, if you and Captain Batel are experiencing...difficulties, I would be happy to demonstrate some neuro-pressure massage techniques which can be quite stimulating. T'Pring has said I am particularly skilled, and as you are aware, Vulcans cannot lie.
Pike: Okay, now I'm really uncomfortable with this.
I suppose Doctor M'Benga could sub in as confidant instead.
Well, VOY would never be so crass as to explicitly say so, but “Body and Soul” is the episode where the subject of Tuvok’s pon farr comes up.
And on Vulcan they just call it masturbation.
I kinda hope that "Legacy" does get off the ground, if for no other reason than that all the folks champing at the bit for it will be confronted by the fact that once you take out the TNG cast, what you're left with is show created by the same dude who was showrunner for season two of PIC and who thinks owning a BttF DeLorean is a personality trait, featuring the Scrappy Doo of Star Trek.
