I'm not a sociologist or anything, but I'm like 99.968% sure that it has something to do with the whole "puritanical ethics" thing - which boiled down to 'how do i determine if something is a sin?' 'did you enjoy it in any way?' 'yes' 'SINNER!'
I mean, they left pre-Victorian England and split with the already recently (relatively speaking) fractured (and some might say fractous eyyyylol) Church of England because Luther's 99 Theses were for pussies and his reformation wasn't hardcore enough. Imagine being so full of sin that you simply couldn't see the inherent blasphemy in things like music... Or how it was evil (and probably slutty or something) to have clothes that had horribly prideful (not to mention slutty) features such as 'color'
I do like the thought of them eyeing the Amish that are moving in down the way warily and just muttering, "There goes the neighborhood! Fucking hippies here to corrupt the young'ns" while they shake their heads in disgust
