Not all communists are tankies. I understand many people (especially Americans) assume that connection because of the cold war era propaganda. However, many self identified communists have no respect or admiration for authoritarian states like China or the USSR.

& I think solarpunk tends to draw in communists, anarchists, libertarians and other radical views. To create a significant change in how humans relate to the environment around us, we would also likely need a significant change in how we relate to eachother. This means some sort of change to our modern system of profit based sucess (i.e. modern capitalism).

I get why you created the community and agree having a space for those discussions is important. I think maybe the name and narrow focus kind of encourage it to be a space that will attract a lot of negative attention.

Do you think a space focused on encouraging other direct actions could serve a similar purpose while avoiding some of the inherent antagonism of its current form? Maybe something like "beyondvoting" or "directaction". Then even people who do vote are encouraged to go beyond 4 year single day actions. It opens the space for dicussing the limitations of american democracy while still looking beyond it at what else people can do.

I like the idea of linking in the sidebar. Then we still have the strength of decentralization & the convinience easily accessing everything

I love all the ideas for the community, especially the inclusion of handmade or modified items. Vintage item megathred will be especially good on lemmy since users can post images in the comments.

The only thing im iffy about is self promotion/advertising-- maybe it could be limited certain day of the week or something? I like the other stipulations you listed for self promotion.

I think people like watching things they can relate to / fantasize about doing.

So i would think old people would enjoy watching old people, at least some of the time. Kinda like 30 something moms who are really into dad bods. Or all the milf porn some middle aged dudes like.
