It would be annoying to see repeat posts, this is people's main complaint. In my opinion this could be fixed with a tab system that takes you between comments sections of posts of the same URL on different instances.
This feels like the best of both worlds.

I don't think being mainstream can kill this in the same way due to the nature of how instances are hosted and their level of customizability. Even if it gets hyper popular and there are communities that rival the biggest subreddits, there will always be smaller niche communities that fit the bill you're looking for. If they don't exist you can simply host your own
Upload and down vote are still present, and unless I'm mistaken this comment section I'm looking at is still sorted by vote score.
Hate down votes are inevitable, I don't think they are a result of your total number of points being displayed on your profile.

Love love loved my steam controller. I wish I bought 50 when they were 5 bucks.
The deck doesn't feel right in my hands, im glad I was able to sit down and use one before I spent the money.
I would love a Steam Controller 2.0, or even just another run of the original.
