Have just noticed that when I long press a community name in feed, it shows the “unsubscribe” option for all communities, whether I’m subscribed or not. I don’t know when this started happening; I haven’t had occasion to see it for a while before today.

Am I crazy? Anyone else seeing this?

Am gizmo shopping and would like some smart door locks. Figured y’all might have some recommendations on things that play nice with Home Assistant if networked, and generally don’t suck.

Features I think I want (but open to opinions/suggestions):

  • physical key backup in addition to numerical keypad
  • rfid so we can use our lovely magic rings
  • enough distinct keypad codes that 4 family members and maybe half a dozen others can get their own
  • not fugly (current door hardware is black)
  • cheap enough that I can get 3 of them and still eat this month
  • I’m wary of Bluetooth, but that might be a holdover from old versions that used to be insecure af. Not really up on it any more from a security standpoint.

Any of the above can be compromised on if my assumptions are wrong. Open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

I'm shopping for a new car, and would like to choose one made with the least bad labour practices, if possible.

My reading suggests there is literally no good choice, but curious if anyone here has a perspective that could inform my choice.

Is there any car company that shits on their workers less and/or chooses contractors/vendors that shit on their workers less than the rest? Or are we just doomed to drive around the blood sweat and tears of exploited persons?

Shopping in America.

Edit: New to me. Used just as likely.

Bold of you to assume they went for the $24 end of that range instead of the $5 end.

Standby for a wave of PR masquerading as news.

From the article, retrieved 2023-08-26:

As talks with the Writers Guild of America stall, the studio trade association has retained D.C.-based firm The Levinson Group to pursue a fresh messaging strategy.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers has hired a prominent Washington, D.C.-based crisis management firm to assist its messaging effort as the double actors and writers strike grinds on with no end in sight. The studios’ trade association has been under an unprecedented national spotlight in its four-decade history as the work stoppages lead to severe ripple-effect economic consequences.

The organization as well as the PR company, The Levinson Group, declined to comment. It’s led by namesake Molly Levinson, a former political director at CNN and CBS turned strategic adviser for corporate clients with reputational and risk concerns. She’s also known for her work on behalf of the restaurant Comet Ping Pong, countering “Pizzagate,” as well as the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team in its campaign for pay equity.

The AMPTP’s addition of The Levinson Group augments its existing pair of retained media consultants, both of whom have spent their careers in Hollywood: Chris Day, previously UTA’s longtime communications head, and Scott Rowe, who spent decades in messaging for Warner Bros.

The AMPTP has a history of reaching beyond the entertainment industry to the political world for assistance in the midst of a strike emergency. During the 2007-08 WGA stoppage, the association brought on Chris Lehane and Mark Fabiani, the Democratic Party operatives, who had also previously done work for the Screen Actors Guild in 2002 during its impasse with the Association of Talent Agents.

The studios aren’t alone in enlisting new PR reinforcements for the current standoff: SAG-AFTRA has hired Precision Strategies, led by Stephanie Cutter, who served as deputy campaign manager for Barack Obama’s 2012 presidential run.

Since the Writers Guild first walked in early May when it didn’t come to an agreement on a new labor contract, the AMPTP, its company members and especially their CEOs have found themselves villainized. The situation has worsened for management as workers have made their case on social media while the AMPTP has chosen to remain silent — except, of course, for step-in-it moments like Disney chief Bob Iger’s Sun Valley commentary, which provoked its own backlash.

The Levinson Group’s hiring in recent days follows consideration of several firms. It has yet to finalize its action plan, which will follow the apparent breakdown of the recently renewed talks between the AMPTP and the WGA. The union condemned the association’s messaging decision to publicly release, on Aug. 22, the studios’ counteroffer, considering it to be an end-run around its negotiating committee.

If you've firmly but politely articulated what your skill set is, and they've told you it's fine, you're literally being paid to skill up. I don't see the problem. You haven't lied about your qualifications, instead you've been told they want you on the project, even though you don't know the language yet. This is a good thing.

Can we stop doing videos as news and opinion please? They're an inefficient, annoying, and intrusive way to communicate this kind of information. If it doesn't need to be visual, it is in video format only for monetization reasons, which I'd think would be more concerning to this community.

Thanks for an amazing app.

Hello geniuses, wondering if there's a way to get to a user profile from a private message with them? At the moment this doesn't seem possible.

Also if someone can clue me in how to search posts within a community that would be great - I can't figure it out and thus don't know if this is redundant!

You may want to remake this with a worse font, if there even is one. I can still read it, which was clearly not what you intended.

Hello, trying liftoff for the first time and my “subscribed” feed and “blocks” tab are both empty, though they should be heavily populated.

Known bug?

(Also sorry if this has been asked/answered, voyager doesn’t have a search community posts feature!)

Your title is un-self critical and condescending, so your conversations probably aren’t terribly productive in either direction.

That turn of phrase has never been used by someone conversing in good faith and with an open mind.

Edit: Jack Nicholson excepted

I think it suggests that the thing is unprompted, and nobody asked for it.
