Lemmygrad is hands down one of the most polite and inclusive online communities I've ever seen. I simply can't recall any instance where I disagreed with somebody here and we couldn't resolve it using a constructive and polite discussion. This is frankly unheard of on most social media platforms and vast majority of Lemmy instances.
I don't think there's a chance of actual socialism in the near term, but it is worth noting that USSR is regarded as a time when Russia was a superpower. Lots of people who lived during Soviet times are still alive and overwhelmingly speak positively of it. So, there isn't a comparable level of anti-communist propaganda that there is in the west. And, now that Russia is being pushed into China's orbit we'll necessarily see influence from Chinese system in Russia. A lot of people are looking at China and realizing that this could've been them if different decisions were made in the 90s.
On top of that, Russian economy is already organized in a similar fashion to Chinese economy. State owned enterprise accounts for around half the economy, and government tends to exercise direction over private enterprise as well. I'd argue this creates more favorable conditions for transition to socialism than what we see in the west.
So, I definitely think there is a very real possibility of Russia transitioning to becoming a socialist state that's modelled on China in the long run.
Yup, that sounds like run of the mill Chinese dissident alright.
While it's true that genocide is a somewhat ambiguous term, it's widely used and most people understand the intended meaning behind it. I do think that calls to avoid using the term from western media are in fact malicious. These calls come from the same publications that had no problems using the term in the context of Ukraine, and they're certainly not going to switch to using a more descriptive term like extermination.
it's disturbing how accurate that meme is
There always has to be an external malicious actor at play because otherwise it would mean that liberalism is failing and people are increasingly rejecting it. We see this happening in US as well where democrats still believe in the whole Russiagate conspiracy theory despite it having been thoroughly debunked at this point.
People who are still in the liberal mainstream are invariably those who haven't been hit by any significant economic hardship, and they see their conditions as being largely representative of those of a typical person. They dismiss the notion that people are rejecting liberalism because the standard of living is declining because their own standard of living has remained largely unchanged. So, the only logical explanation must be that nefarious Russians or Chinese or whoever are behind all this brewing civil unrest western countries are seeing.
Correct take
I definitely expect the west to embrace fascism because that's the natural evolution of the capitalist system in a crisis. The problem the west has right now is that it allowed itself to be deindustrialized, and it's heavily dependent on the rest of the world for a lot of essentials. This problem doesn't really have an easy solution as you can't just flip a switch and create a domestic industrial economy out of the whole cloth. And as western influence continues to shrink the west will loose access to cheap commodities they've been extracting from the rest of the world. We're seeing a perfect example of this happening with Niger asserting its sovereignty and kicking France out. All of a sudden France lost access to effectively free uranium that it was robbing Niger of. Having to deal with other countries on equal terms means higher input prices for western industries, and that will only heighten the economic crisis.

I'm as shocked by this as you are.
amazing how all the mainstream western media is full of Russian propaganda all of a sudden :)
