This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.
Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.
Posting Guidelines
All posts should follow this basic structure:
- Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
- What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
- Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
- Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
- Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.
Rules
- Post only about bans or other sanctions that you have received from a mod or admin.
- Don’t use private communications to prove your point. We can’t verify them and they can be faked easily.
- Don’t deobfuscate mod names from the modlog with admin powers.
- Don’t harass mods or brigade comms. Don’t word your posts in a way that would trigger such harassment and brigades.
- Do not downvote posts if you think they deserved it. Use the comment votes (see below) for that.
- You can post about power trippin’ in any social media, not just lemmy. Feel free to post about reddit or a forum etc.
- If you are the accused PTB, while you are welcome to respond, please do so within the relevant post.
Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.
Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.
YTPB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.
Some acronyms you might see.
- PTB - Power-Tripping Bastard: The commenter agrees with you this was a PTB mod.
- YDI - You Deserved It: The commenter thinks you deserved that mod action.
- BPR - Bait-Provoked Reaction: That mod probably overreacted in charged situation, or due to being baited.
- CLM - Clueless mod: The mod probably just doesn't understand how their software works.

Randomly calling people "zionists" raises red flags. Seems more of a bpr to me
Actually, that user has been banned from your instance: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/u/shoulderoforion@fedia.io
Yes, and he's no innocent victim. OP has the correct assessment. But agree with everyone else that this comes across as a BPR/YDI, because it was completely out of context.
It's more useful imo to report the comments of that user each time they say something hateful, so they can get banned on their home instance.
Have reported, gets ignored. I report all these people and it continues.
Well we instance banned him so reports do help. But yeah would be good if the fedia.io admin would do something.
Pinged them above, let's see how it goes
Maybe go read some of his comments and you'll get it. No we shouldn't give an inch to people who celebrate death of innocents. and the REASON given for the ban makes zero sense.
If you call someone a Zionist for making an innocuous comment, even if they really are a Zionist, you are still in the wrong because you assume your audience already knows they are one.
Since nobody else knows the history, they just see you being an asshole.
interesting considering the upvotes then. Perhaps it encouraged SOME people to maybe dig into the comment history.
People on Lemmy need to keep their eyes open and stop taking each and every comment at face value and start keeping a working memory of who these users are and how the behave, or else we may as well just let the communities turn into new reddit.
You cannot seriously expect everyone to keep track of hundreds of anonymous handles.
I can probably name like 4 Lemmy users and I only remember those because I like them.
Who are they? Genuinely curious
(All 4 are me)
Me, myself, and my alt.
My short list (most memorable, but not necessarily because I like them) is PugJesus, Yogsoth, return2ozma, and yourself. I'd add db0, but it feels like cheating since it's the instance name as well.
Thanks!
N.. Not because I like you, or anything... Baka!
Use a client that allows you to make tags. Not that difficult to immediately label the shitty people like Zionists, Racists, Transphobes, etc.
Label them to yourself, sure. Go around shouting ‘ZIONIST!’ everywhere and you come off a loon.
Guess I care too much about this platform that I'm willing to call out the scum when I see it and not let it spread bringing us all down in the process
Are there nuances to the word Zionist? I don't know enough about the culture in the Levant. If you call someone that, you're assuming other people know what you're talking about. I strongly suggest you stay away from labels, but call out what they're actually doing.
The problem is, nobody else can see the tags you apply to a user. So to everyone else, it just looks like you're calling someone a Zionist out of the blue if they're not already familiar with that user's history.
Nope. I upvote that user's comments when they seem reasonable, downvote when they aren't. We learn from each other and rethink our own positions when called out by each other. If that user chooses not to rethink their position, that's on them.
No thanks, I'm not willing to wait around for a Zionist to "change". Again, perhaps go read his comments elsewhere.
I'm not waiting for them to change. I'm busy with my own stuff. People are telling you to modify your behavior. You are rejecting that. Do you.
An individualistic approach to cultivating community is counterproductive.
I'm neither admin nor mod. My strength and power lies in controlling me. I report particular nastiness when I see it.
Open hostility towards bad actors is useful in driving out the less-dedicated of the bad actors, in establishing norms against bad actors, and in discouraging any would-be bad actors who want to join.
Every member of a community has the power to contribute to that.
In theory, if we had perfect judgment then maybe this would be a healthy approach.
In practice I see a lot of people who think they’re doing this but are just caught up in their own emotions and are really engaged in bullying.
There's definite caution that needs to be exercised in doing this, at the very least, as well as encouragement of restraint from the community and correction from the same.
