Social democracy is just a bandaid and nothing more; social democrats think the existing system is mostly great with some minor weaknesses that can be fixed with market-based economics. It's completely divorced from reality.

Edit: To make sure I cover all of my bases, there is a difference between social democracy and democratic socialism. It's pretty fundamental.

I remember a conversation with someone about 10 yrs ago that described the situation quite well

Conservatives turn the screws for 2 or 3 terms. Labour get in for a term to loosen the screws a quarter turn to let the country rest a little bit before the conservatives get back in to continue turning again

Yeah, over in the states they call it the "ratchet effect." It doesn't surprise me, given how politicians and oligarchs are a match made in hell that we continue to pretend doesn't make the world a worse place.
