Isn't he supposed to be 'the left'?

[–] JacksonLamb@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

Centre left.

They are facing some push back within their own party, but ableism is probably the most socially accepted form of bigotry amongst the left in the UK.

He's a conservative that realized the Torries were going to fuck themselves over hard.

Wow, he's going to kill people. On top of possibly becoming homeless or starving, don't a lot of disabled Brits have coin-/card-operated electricity meters? This is extremely cruel and will be even worse come next winter.

While ministers have acknowledged deep anxiety among welfare recipients, the disability minister, Stephen Timms, refused to guarantee, when pressed by MPs, that the most disabled in society, who would never be able to work, would not see their support cut.

Emphasis mine. Stephen Timms, you absolute ghoul. This is your ministry, you fucking pathetic, spineless carrot.

Yeah, card/key operated gas and electric meters AKA prepayment. The newer meters which aren't prepayment can be remotely changed to prepayment if people are in debt or the company just decides to do it. I believe those customers also pay more.

This is simply heart wrenching.

Social democrats of Europe: «why won’t voters vote for us??»

Because you’re either corrupt or you do the exact same shit as conservatives would do. Or both!

Social democracy is just a bandaid and nothing more; social democrats think the existing system is mostly great with some minor weaknesses that can be fixed with market-based economics. It's completely divorced from reality.

Edit: To make sure I cover all of my bases, there is a difference between social democracy and democratic socialism. It's pretty fundamental.

I remember a conversation with someone about 10 yrs ago that described the situation quite well

Conservatives turn the screws for 2 or 3 terms. Labour get in for a term to loosen the screws a quarter turn to let the country rest a little bit before the conservatives get back in to continue turning again

The lyrics for this song, particularly the finale quote, are pretty apt to your point. NSFW if your boss doesn't like the word fuck.

[–] Z3k3@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

I'm Scottish we use the word fuck as a verb. Nown. Adverb punctuation etc.

Yeah, over in the states they call it the "ratchet effect." It doesn't surprise me, given how politicians and oligarchs are a match made in hell that we continue to pretend doesn't make the world a worse place.
