Wood might flex a bit and absorb the impact, making it hurt a bit less. Concrete won't.

Not even that - a wooden nightstand is much lighter than a stack of cinder blocks. If you kick a nightstand hard enough, it'll hurt like hell but the table will move. The bricks will not.
