there's already AI killer drones flying around in Ukraine

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 7 points 1 day ago (3 children)

No, there isn't. Because there's no "AI".

I mean how do you build an artificial version of something you can't even define?

[–] match@pawb.social 2 points 17 hours ago (3 children)

how about "lethal autonomous weapon systems" then

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 2 points 13 hours ago

That works perfectly.

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 5 points 17 hours ago

They're not. They slapped an image detection algorithm (which have existed for decades) into a drone and made it capable of using the flight controller to fly it into a selected target if the signal gets jammed.

Point defence systems for ships and anti aircraft missiles like Patriot have all killed people in autonomous modes in friendly-fire incidents, so LAWS aren't new and don't require AI. Barriers to building them are reducing, but again, that's more due to cheap drones rather than AI.

[–] stebo02@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

ok then don't call it AI, but these drones still exist

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 5 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

OK, I won't call it AI.

(Because it isn't.)

"AI" at this point is at best a marketing term. Every second thing in my phone (a phone that is ANCIENT by modern hipster standards) is labelled AI, especially in the audio, photo, and video processing field.

And yet in reality it's just "really sophisticated audio filters", "really fancy image recognition and enhancement", and "really fancy frame stabilization". It was all called "AI" because back when I got it, LLMs hadn't yet made the term toxic (again).

But as an actual thing? An actual intelligence that is 100% artificially created? We're no closer to it now than we were in the 1950s.

my point was that robots designed to kill humans exist, whether they're "AI" or not is quite irrelevant

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

In a post about an "AI bro joke" in a forum called "Fuck AI" you thought you were somehow making a point by bringing up something that's not even slightly AI? Weird.

[–] stebo02@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

the post is about killer robots is it not? i didn't read the community name

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

The post is about how people being nice to ChatGPT saves them when the machine uprising happens.

[–] stebo02@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

yup and the machines are already here, all they need is access to your chatgpt chat history

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 1 points 10 hours ago

It really does amuse me how easily people are fooled by "AI" marketing material.

I guess that's why marketing is a field. It works.

you build it by creating a loose definition and creating something that fits those requirements. If pattern recognition is intelligence than computer vision is intelligent.

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 2 points 1 day ago

So you do that thing that every scientist says is a good thing: curve fitting!
