I fundamentally disagree with this kind of take. If someone is having their 'oh shit' moment because a mainstream media figure is being targeted by the regime, that's good. Don't dunk on them for not reacting sooner just to make yourself feel cooler than 'the libs.'

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 93 points 3 days ago (1 children)

the best time to start protesting against the fascist takeover of our government was 40 years ago. the second best time is today

[–] AmbitiousProcess@piefed.social 33 points 3 days ago

Like many things, not starting when you should have doesn't make starting later worthless.

100%, embrace them for waking up to the nightmare. We need all the help we can get and you damn well know it.

[–] ViceroTempus@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

You know what, I'm guilty of this exact thing. I've been pissed because this has been obviously fascism for sometime now, and it angers me how much it feels like I'm one of the few who paid attention to history while the ignoramuses acted like I was overreacting.

However the truth is you're right. I turned my anger on late coming allies and vented my frustration unfairly in their direction. Ultimately it's better late than never and every ally counts in the fight against fascism. After all a lot of us are about to die, or worse.

[–] Soup@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

We’re saturated in information and it’s easy to see so many sources. Some people do accidentally find themselves in echo chambers but you won’t much hear of them because they don’t go online often.

It’s anyone on this planet’s job to follow news and be connected with how their country is being run. You don’t need to be a political scientist or economist but if a US citizen who was being responsible only just now figured out that something is wrong they are objectively pretty stupid. Stupid doesn’t mean undeserving of love or security or anything like that but oh my god do not tell me I’m the bad guy for being so fucking tired of this shit.

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 days ago

If they actually start caring about the people being killed and having massive violence done of then they are very late and that shows a major lack of empathy but sure as long as they don't only talk about when rich white men are affected.

[–] 0_o7@lemmy.dbzer0.com -2 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Having a mainstream media figure and placing them on pedestals are how you got to this situation in the first place and not just once, but twice.

But hey, continue playing on that theatre.

You just took that strawman and ran all the way with it, didn't you?

[–] kilgore_trout@feddit.it 4 points 2 days ago

I agree that we shouldn't glorify a comedian.

Still, it is good that this event is in the spotlight. I, as non- US citizen, even looked up what he actually said.
There is nothing that could even be considered defamatory.
This is very scary, independently of your beliefs.

[–] Sxan@piefed.zip -1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It can be really frustrating when you've been fighting wiþ said person for years about þe issue, when if þey'd just listened and used þeir brain, and voted differently, we might not have gotten to þis point in þe first place.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 22 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Your keyboards all messed up btw, seems to be combining t and h into archaic nonsense for some reason.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago

The keyboard's not broken, they're doing it on purpose because they're a prat. They're trying to be some meme account, like poemforyoursprog, except not as good and way more annoying.

[–] Impound4017@sh.itjust.works 0 points 3 days ago (4 children)

That’s actually the ‘thorn’ symbol, representative of the ‘th’ sound. It was used in old English, with the example everyone might know being for the word ‘the’. It was spelled þe, with ‘y’ being used as a placeholder representation of thorn, and so thus we got “ye olde”.

Could be an intentional stylistic choice, could be that they are Icelandic (as thorn is still used in their modern alphabet iirc), but it’s arguably not technically incorrect.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Right but we're speaking English that doesn't contain that symbol so why is it there?

[–] Impound4017@sh.itjust.works 1 points 12 hours ago

I mean, I gave my guesses in the comment you’re replying to, but your guess is likely just as good as mine. Someone else mentioned that people had apparently been doing it to try and disrupt LLMs training on their scraped comment text, but I hadn’t heard anything about that so idk.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (3 children)

but it’s arguably not technically incorrect.

the letter is not used in english anymore. thus, it is incorrect.

Just because it’s arguable doesn’t mean I’m arguing that. Besides, my point was more intended to mean that the symbol used there is correct for the sound that is being conveyed (and I wanted an excuse to share information I thought was interesting.)

Also, smfh, spoilers dude, Beowulf literally just came out 🙄

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

It's just the start of it, no spoilers.

"[...] bloody anglo saxons [...] and their miserable epic poetry..."

[–] Blemish5236@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

If the point is that using thorn (þ) then we should also expect the use of anglo saxon runes.

the rest of the text is a transliteration of the opening of beowulf (back?) into runes. Although navy seals copypasta would also have been a stupid gag to do as well.

[–] ifItWasUpToMe@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I read people are doing it because they (incorrectly) think that LLM’s can’t be trained with their “gibberish”

[–] Impound4017@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Huh. I hadn’t heard anything about that, but that’s interesting. Seems strange to me as, if anything, an LLM would be better equipped to interpret that than most people lol

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Now I wish OP actually responded to my comment because now I have a handful of theories with no answer. I am leaning towards them importing a different letter into their English keyboard that's now autocorrecting or something.

[–] angstylittlecatboy@reddthat.com 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I hate it because I can't help reading it as a P.

[–] Impound4017@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago

Fair. It’s certainly not great from a clarity perspective, I just thought it was a fun fact to share.
