Under the order, private businesses can choose to display signage indicating that ICE cannot enter without a warrant—thereby designating “their property as part of a city-wide network of community spaces that stand together in affirming the safety, dignity, and belonging of all of our residents,” the mayor said.

Johnson touted the order for building “a broad civic shield that limits the reach of harmful enforcement practices. It strengthens neighborhood solidarity and it reaffirms Chicago’s role as a welcoming city.”

Something that the current ICE activity brings to light is how lopsided government power has become in the US. The federal government has too much internal power and influence on US soil while state and local governments have too little.

Unless a state/local government is actively engaging in interstate crime against the wishes of their neighboring states the federal government shouldn't have any authority to impose federal laws/rules on those states.

The power structure of this country was more bottom up when it came to government authority and state autonomy when we broke off from the UK, we should seriously get back to that in some respects.

I don't know, states have plenty of power in many ways. CA is constantly banning things, Texas banned abortions, etc. I sure as hell wouldn't want NC's legislature in control of the nation.

The federal government has too much internal power and influence

It gets messy when the administration ignores the rule of law and owns the judiciary enough to make it legal.

I agree with the gist of that, but being born and raised in the deep south, I believe the federal government coming in to enforce civil rights was very necessary.

That is not what this is. This is literally the opposite, and its insane that they are seriously trying to make that comparison.

The federal government came in to desegregate public schools. They didn't drop from helicopters on to the roof of private domiciles and send swat teams to kick down doors to arrest anybody opposed to desegregation.

The government is supposed to protect and defend the rights of every American, even if you disagree with them. That's also why "DEI" exists, and I hate to break it to anyone who gets angry hearing "DEI" talk, but if you're not named something like "Welslyian Trottersworth IV," like it or not, you have most likely benefitted from "DEI practices," at some point in your life.

Edit: And for those who might be asking, well what about young Welslyian? Why is he somehow less deserving just for being born into a consequence free life full of untouchable privilege? Welslyian IV is entitled to the same rights as anyone else, but exactly who TF do you think you need protection from? Who is it that you believe made society exclusionary in the first place?

If your ancestors were among the unfortunate souls who had to leap to their deaths from a burning building because Welslyian the first had locked the factory door to keep workers from taking unnecessary breaks on the clock; or those who went down into the coal mine one day only to be buried alive and abandoned because Welslyian the first knew he could save money by just closing off the caved in mines and starting over with new workers, maybe, just maybe, you should be asking yourself why you're so concerned about Welslyian IV not reaping the benefits of "DEI practices?"

Do you think Welslyians I-IV have ever given a shit about you or your well being? Or have they always just exploited you for their own personal gain? If you know the answer to that, then why do you think they need you to be so concerned on their behalf now, and why do you keep falling for it?

They did send in the national guard to desegregate schools though.

It should be noted that public schools are, well public. The feds shouldn't have a domestic police force they can target at anything they want and customs enforcement should be severely restricted geographically.

It blows my mind that ICE shut down its like human trafficking, crime etc divisions to go after like farmworkers and home depot parking lots. It shows that what conservatives are most afraid of is seeing brown people in public and talk of "immigration enforcement" should be nakedly seen as what it actually is.

Politicians talking about immigration should address it as such; no "bipartisan" immigration bills. You either believe in supreme court rubber stamped racial profiling or you believe in laws. There's no bipartisanship when both sides are talking about different things. Democrats or a new party need to come up with an actual immigration system reform wholly distinct from republican race wars.

Imo these functions should be split back up and there need to be a constitutional amendment banning the arrest of anyone under any law by a person without either a displayed ID showing a state issued badge or a warrant.

I don't have problems with DEI, but I would rather hold #4 up to the consequences of his own actions rather than those of his ancestors.

He is held up to the consequences of his own actions. #4 is not having his rights taken away bc some poor kid wrote an essay and got a spot at a university doing science for the summer, and #4s family made too much money for him to qualify.

#4 still has the connections that make it possible to call up family friends and say #4 wants to work in a lab this summer, here are his hours make it happen, and definitely has the money to go to a science camp for an entire summer.

Professor O'Hara's kid might also not qualify for that particular spot. Luckily he has his own connections, despite growing up poor, because professor O'Hara qualified for a similar spot as a kid and now he works at a university.

Some random kid like myself, who grew up poor white trash, with zero connections, but will become the first person in their family to graduate from college, yet have no idea how to navigate college when they get there, could really benefit from getting a spot like that.

I would have qualified, but I didn't have that particular opportunity as a kid. Luckily there were other programs available that helped me navigate college once I got there. Thanks to those programs, I have also gotten to work with other kids who will also become the first in their family to graduate from college.

Those types of programs and practices are exactly where the majority of villainized DEI funding actually goes to. Funny that nobody seems to give a fuck about where that funding is now going instead, and who will benefit.

Don't worry about #4 though, he'll be just fine bc it turns out he happened to get a huge government contract to help build the new data center in town. Maybe someday my kids will have the privilege of toiling in one of his kid's factories, and fighting their boss for the right to unionize. Just like in the good ole days (and like my own father tried and failed to do multiple times when I was growing up). Is that what progress is supposed to look like?
