Gaza

There's a complete internet and cellular blackout in Gaza as Israeli airstrikes are intensifying. Palestinians are being wiped out.

I didn't go looking for this information

I think what's wild to me is how divided this conflict is making people.

There's just a shitload of anger on both sides. It feels impossible to have a nuanced view on the whole thing.

[-] Force_majeure122@aussie.zone 3 points 1 year ago

Yep. Most people want to be either 'pro Israel' or 'pro Palestine' which in their simplistic view means anti-the-other-side at all costs. I think Israel deciding enough is enough and ending Hamas is fair. I also think loss of innocent Palestinian lives is unfair, which makes things very complicated.

[-] Marsupial@quokk.au 1 points 1 year ago

Do you think Palestine saying enough is enough and killing Israel is fair?

[-] Force_majeure122@aussie.zone 3 points 1 year ago

I think there is a big difference between 'Hamas' and 'Palestine', and if you're referring to the attack on the music festival and nearby villages, and hostage taking, then no I don't think that's fair.

[-] Marsupial@quokk.au 2 points 1 year ago

Just a general question.

If Palestinians attacked Israel would that also be fair for you?

[-] Force_majeure122@aussie.zone 5 points 1 year ago

I think you're picking on my use of the word 'fair', which is probably fair enough (heh). The situation is too complicated and obviously atrocities have been committed by both sides, and many attacks have already happened from both sides. You need to first ask whether Israel should even exist as it is now, which I honestly don't think I know enough about to have a strong opinion. I used to think that it was an abomination to be honest. I think ive changed my thoughts to more like "well, it's there now, let's make it work?". It's from that perspective that I made my opinion in the previous comment. All that said i'm no geopolitics expert, just a curious observer airing my thoughts 🤷‍♂️

If the internet is blocked how do you know Palestinians are being wiped out?

Also, wouldn't it take many many months of target carpet bombing, just like what has been happening in Ukraine?

[-] baconmash@aussie.zone 6 points 1 year ago

It’s densely populated. Imagine carpet bombing Melbourne Central all the way down to Flinders Street on a Saturday afternoon.

[-] cherryripesalmoncake@aussie.zone 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Gaza Strip is 365km2 compared to Ukraine’s 603,550km2.

Gaza city being 45km2 compared to 839km2 for Kiev.

Per Wikipedia.

Good critical thinking, but push further. A complete blackout is almost impossible in this age - especially in an area that's a global focus. There's too many points of access across too many differing technologies. On a broader note, carpet bombing isn't subtle and even if the area was a complete blackout, you can see that shit from surrounding countries.

Area wise, it's a small space. Different terrain. Ukraine is a sprawling country, Gaza is a narrow, dense strip. It's the difference between bombing victoria and bombing flinders street

[-] Outlier1031@aussie.zone 4 points 1 year ago

You do know there are journalists in the region who would have internet access right? Palestine also barely had any infrastructure to begin with. It's carpet bombing doesn't take long when your bombing a city that has been carpet bombed about fifty times already and has been unable to rebuild. What an ignorant take on the situation.

[-] Taleya@aussie.zone 6 points 1 year ago

Aiii, what's the point of the ignorant comment. Seagoon isn't a random bad faith troll, they're a reg. Don't be punitive. Help them understand or skate on by.
