I treat it as a joke because it is a joke. It would be like arguing that a party that ran on expanding debt slavery isn't literal slavery because you can't trade debt slaves.

Instead talk about how the modern prison system is a form of indentured servitude akin to slavery that predominantly impacts minorities. Can you reasonably equate it to actual slavery?
