I thought I’d create a post where we can discuss our theories! Here’s mine…

I think when she met with the law firm to convince them to send Janette the cease and desist letter she also got advice on how to shut down her rapidly growing snark page. She knows that the two are interconnected and Janette is getting most of her information from Reddit snarkers/former “fans”. This TERRIFIES her as she knows the truth will eventually come out.

I don’t think Knix or SI had anything to do with it, nor do I think Reddit cares about a nobody from Canada. I think she either 1. Reported based on a (likely exaggerated) violation that she knew Reddit would take seriously or 2. Had her cronies overwhelm the reporting system in a short amount of time. I think the latter is more likely, or at least in combination with 1.

I also don’t think the fact that Reddit is rapidly removing similar subs is related. I think they have tagged keywords that lead to subs automatically being removed, or can somehow see when former sub members congregate elsewhere (even completely private subs are being removed). For this reason I think we need to be careful when commenting about TBP on other influencer snark subs.

Thoughts? I probably didn’t share anything new here but ranged to get it out! Regardless of what happens, SNL will not win as the cat is already out of the bag and it’s the only reason she’s doubling down so hard.

I also think she’s enjoyed the opticals of “oh, she’s so powerful and totally shut down Reddit” when she 100% didn’t just fire off an email. It’s fuelling her smugness. I think your theory is pretty dead-on.

[-] ladybonerforjustice@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 months ago

Agreed. She’s shown us she’s just not that smart and I don’t think the people around her are either.

[-] Bitchwhiskers@lemmy.ca 18 points 3 months ago

I agree with the theory that it was reported for violations and her friends reported it also.

I’m also really sus about the dude here on Lenny who flagged us immediately as soon as our group appeared. I think there’s a mole among us. Maybe a lurker. Idanno.

Not sure how I feel about brands being involved. I’d like to believe free speech still exists but you never know.

The new sub that was shut down within hours broke a Reddit rule so that’s that. But the original ban, I tend to agree with you.

I’m so pissed about the whole thing.

If I may, Lemmy tends to be pretty quiet (the site is much smaller than Reddit, 50k active users monthly total), so that's why new communities with activity such as yours tend to be spotted quite fast

[-] Bitchwhiskers@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 months ago

Thanks for that insight. Appreciate it :)

Thank you for welcoming us thus far. :)

let me be a devil advocate, as someone that's here since a year ago

lemmy is small, too small, we had trolls attacking us since the start, DDos attacks, even fucking CP material, we have a lot of problematic instances full of trolls too(that lemmy.ca is disconnected thanksfully) so yeah, we are afraid of a bunch of people coming suddenly and making problems, maybe a bit to much afraid, but lemmy.ca admins aren't going to suddenly delete you all, at least i never heard of something like that happening, so just keep it civil, i'm not an admin btw, and welcome!

[-] Blaze@reddthat.com 5 points 3 months ago

but lemmy.ca admins aren’t going to suddenly delete you all, at least i never heard of something like that happening

The lemmy.ca confirmed already that the community was okay (as long as they respected the instances rules, of course): https://lemmy.ca/comment/9620650

I loved that the snark came up #2 in Google search when anyone searched her. Our snark was everywhere in searches on her, no matter the wording. I think this is why she worked so hard to take it down.

[-] ladybonerforjustice@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 months ago

I think you’re right. Hopefully we can grow this one so the same thing happens.

I think your tinfoil hat works pretty well. I think it’s her, a team of lawyers (and boy do I hope they made her pay out the nose for advice), and all her little cheerleaders who successfully silenced 6,000 people….likely the majority being women….likely lots of minorities in there….and her privilege continues to grow. It makes me really sad that people preach all these so called “positive” movements when in reality it is a mean girl popularity contest. I need the silenced to win every now and then…like at least a little.

[-] ladybonerforjustice@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

You’re right that the vast majority of sub members were probably women who were blocked or otherwise made to feel unwelcome by her, whether it was for a good reason or not (I myself was blocked for liking a comment saying she looked different on her IG…that’s it). Has she ever considered that her actions drive people further away and make us feel even more justified in our dislike of her? Nice people simply don’t have thousands of people snarking on them.

[-] Spicykitty@lemmy.ca 15 points 3 months ago

I think it's definitely possible! I'm not fully sure.

Personally, I do find the timing a bit suspicious. This happened right after several posts that also mentioned Knix being complicit over the weekend and also within a day of a post showing a bunch of negative Glassdoor reviews. I don't know if knix had actual involvement here.

I also think it's possible that we just received an influx of reports and Reddit canned us as a result. However, I also really don't believe we were actually in violation of reddit TOS. So I hope the mods are able to have luck winning an appeal.

[-] MoonChild@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 months ago

Queen Panties has some skeletons in the closet. I’m sure of it and she had a hand in this - even if it was just advice

[-] ladybonerforjustice@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 months ago

Fair enough! Maybe Joanna and SNL joined forces? SNL probably clued her in that less than flattering things were being shared about her too (rightfully).

Agreed that I don’t think the sub was in violation of anything. The mods at minimum should have received a warning.

[-] Spicykitty@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 months ago

Also just noticed your username lol I love it 😂

I love all the theories and I just want to point out they didn’t have to convince a lawyer to send a cease and desist letter. They get paid to do whatever the client directs them to do. They would advise but didn’t need convincing.

On the sub take down I agree it was probably a concerted effort of reporting based on the change in Reddit rules and I see the Magician’s ladylike hands behind it with help from the Neigjbour. The plan was hatched over a game of Catan one night while chewing some edibles, quaffing some craft beer and swilling flavoured, sparkling water.

I am really new to this whole topic, but thank you for posting your theory here.

[-] ladybonerforjustice@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 months ago

Haha. I hope I posted this on the actual snark page! If not I’ll remove it. Still getting used to this platform 🙃

[-] Blaze@reddthat.com 5 points 3 months ago

You did post it on the correct place 😄

Anyone got a TLDR about this community. You guys popped up and it sounds like fun juicy drama 🤔

[-] urfriendjen@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 months ago

I just started a Q&A thread (I’m newish too). It seemed like a better solution as there’s a LOT to sift through and summarize and didn’t want to put that labor on one person.

Very skimming the surface tldr (again, I’m new to this too): the purpose of the snark is to discuss the lies, fraudulent behavior of a Body positivity influencer who’s used filters/body tune (but denies it), stolen the work of bipoc women and been protected from criticism by sponsors/members of the media. Also exploits her kids for content. TIL pics of her and her kids have shown up on porn sites and apparently she’s well aware that her content is enjoyed by ”unintended” demographics. Ew.

My tin foil hat is telling me that she did all of this because she’s going to come out with a big sob story about her body dysmorphia and come clean about all the filters. And removing the snark page is part of her plan to garner sympathy from all of her followers and have no where for them to go look up all the evidence herself. I think she’s going to “come clean” but really downplay the extent of it all.

[-] nofilterdiva96@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 months ago

Themselves not herself. It’s been a long day 🤣

[-] FraudulentFruit1@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 months ago

I’m going with the lawyer theory and mass reporting. I think when Reddit started being brought up more and more on IG people started reporting? I like to know what’s up with the down voting here though. Is it the same handful of people who are feeling the need?

[-] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 14 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Hey, welcome to Lemmy, please enjoy your stay.

You may find you or users here in general get downvoted more often in the comments than over in Reddit. We don't have any vote fuzzing algorithms, and some client interfaces by default don't hide scores below a threshold which can cause bandwagoning. Also, many people have strong convictions/opinions over your average internet user, which is kinda the reason why we're here to begin with (and you may be as well). Comment karma means nothing here, just take it in stride.

You don't have to agree with everybody. All I ask is you that you help make this a place that is fun and interesting to discuss with people who have the some of the same and some different ideas than you, and so please report trolls, spammers and intentional flamebait. Thanks.

[-] Aforeigneramongfriends@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 months ago

I’m really enjoying the random platform tips that keep getting left here. It’s helping me adapt more quickly. Thank you!

[-] OddQuality@lemmy.ca 13 points 3 months ago

There's immediately 3 down votes every new thread. I'm gonna guess they are 1. Sarah 2. Alicia and 3. the neighbor lol

[-] ladybonerforjustice@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

lol, you’re probably right! They can’t stay away.

[-] ladybonerforjustice@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 months ago

One of the more regular lemmy users commented above that our posts are showing up on the home feed so maybe that’s why.

[-] Blaze@reddthat.com 8 points 3 months ago

Downvotes can be seen by the site admins. Feel free to ping @mp3@lemmy.ca if you think you are being brigaded

[-] mp3@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 months ago

All three are from longtime users, nothing suspicious.

[-] OddQuality@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 months ago

It's honestly really cool that y'all can see who they are!

It was definitely the mass reporting. The original Toronto Snark page got banned for a massive amount of Copyright reports. I think they (they being the group of 4 that is the main focus) all banded together to mass report and then the page was gone. If there was a huge influx of harassment reports on the papaya page they probably just decided to ban it, not investigation or warnings. It's like the Reddit loophole you can use to get rid of pages that you don't like.

Edit to add: It is weird though because brigading of any kind is against Reddit's terms and they were definitely brigading.

[-] ladybonerforjustice@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 months ago

That’s what I was kind of getting at - the lawyers birdie consulted with may have known this and told her to mass report the sub to get it taken down.

[-] Effubirdshit@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 months ago

Ok so a month or so there was a post made about copyright infringement and the person more or less said enjoy your group while it lasts. Because photos were posted of her and the photos technically belong to her is it possible she claimed “copywriter” infringement (the posters words not mine). Anyone else remember this?

[-] Bitchwhiskers@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 months ago

No!! That’s a hot take!

[-] FruitFraud@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 months ago

The Reddit reason was harassment I believe.

[-] ladybonerforjustice@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 months ago

You’re right, found a screenshot from when it was banned saying this.

I don’t understand this as she posted the photos and it was well known they were hers (her name was usually visible)? I guess maybe the ones users made could have been in violation but I’m not sure - SO many subs on Reddit should be shut down if that is the case. Regardless, mods should have been given a warning and chance to rectify the situation. This seems to be the more common process from what I’ve heard.

[-] Effubirdshit@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 months ago

So I did a bit of reading and my understanding is the copyright holder can complain if they want them removed but it’s a process. Other users are saying harassment - which is entirely possible. I just don’t understand why other snarks can stay up when they have similar comments.

Hello new Lemmy friends!

Word on the street tells us our community is regularly making it the all page. While this is very cool news to hear, we can see how the sudden emergence of our posts in your feed might feel jarring and probably raises some questions. And also how, without knowing the backstory, our community might appear less than virtuous, so here’s a very brief introduction which hopefully will clear a few things up.

The woman we’re discussing is a body positive influencer and media personality who has gained fame and wealth by lying, manipulating, exploiting her children for content, plagiarizing BIPOC creators and blaming her BIPOC content editor for it (thereby ruining her career), among other things. Her fraudulent behavior is no different (I’d argue worse) from the likes of Jay Shetty (google him if you don’t know who he is or what he did). She’s the latest in a long line of grifting influencers who are abusing their power, taking advantage of their position and exploiting their followers. The difference is that she’s Canadian. Our laws around social media and advertising aren’t as clear (and where they are she’s disobeyed them), add to that, our mainstream media has protected her from those who’ve tried to expose her grift and silenced/intimidated anyone who’s tried to speak out.

Our Reddit sub was taken down due to reports of copyright infringement, which is unfounded and categorically untrue as no one ever tried to steal her work and pass it off as their own. The mods have made an appeal. While at first glance it may seem like we’re just “shitting on her” the sub has been more devoted to investigation and posting proof of her lies than just bitching for the sake of bitching. The reality is that she’s hurt, manipulated and let down a lot of people. She stole intellectual property and employment, caused mental distress and has repeatedly told lies to boost engagement and profit off her audience, so people are understandably upset that their voices are being silenced.

We’re grateful to have been welcomed so kindly by so many of you, and to those sticking around to watch the drama unfold, we’re glad to have you!
