Wife: You can pick a movie for tonight

Cate Blanchett: The world is changed. I feel it in the water...

Wife: God damnit not again

One does not simply watch LotR once. It is folly.

Its funny, the LOTR trilogy is pretty much mandagory to watch the extended cuts. The Hobbit "trilogy" is pretty much mandatory to watch the fan-edit shortened feature, "There And Back Again, A Hobbit's Tale."

I remember, I saw the theatrical once, in theater.

And now you can see the extended in theater (seriously, this weekend, 1 movie each day through Monday for Cinemark)

I saw Fellowship at AMC last week. I didn't realize it was the extended version when I bought the tickets. But it started EXACTLY on time with no previews, which was amazing in itself, then I noticed it was the extended version and was soooo happy. One of the best theater experiences in my life.

There have been a lot of them around this time for some mysterious reason...

Yeah, it's really weird how a bunch of us all decided to join Lemmy around the same time last year...

I think theatrical is better suited for first timers. It's what we all started with, after all.

I agree and I would even say that a crucial moment in Return of the King works better in the theatrical version and should be experienced first like this. (The arrival of the pirates to the battle of Minas Tirith.)

Speak for yourself -- I've never seen the theatrical edition

I wasn't a huge LOTR fan before the movies. Saw them in theaters and felt there were some confusing bits, and stuff wasn't explained well.

Fast forward to the extended editions, and everything makes total sense. The only movies that truly made the extended versions almost mandatory.

I feel like the extended version of Kingdom of Heaven is much better and makes more sense than the theatrical.

I actually downloaded the theatrical cuts to watch with kids…

They’d be adults by the time we finished the extended ones.

Haha this hits home. I want to watch the trilogy with my family but none of them want to watch the extended cuts with commentary on

I LIVE WITH PHILISTINES I tells ya...

Watched the commentary version once. Was interesting. Didn't feel like I'd watched the movie, tho, because you couldn't really hear the music and the dialogue.

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Valid, I just want to geek out over it.

I think I only watched the theatrical cuts twice: once when they came out, and a second time when the Film Society played them second run at the on-campus theater, so… 2004?

[–] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I have only watched the theatrical ones when they came out. I remember having to piss so bad during a slow scene in ROTK.

I've watched them again, with my kids as that seems to be the only ones available on streaming services. I'd like to watch the extend cuts at some point

[–] pancakes@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I watched them all a couple years ago when me and some friends wanted to binge them all in one day. The extended cuts are superior but we just didn't have time.

[–] threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

wanted to binge them all in one day

One day: 24 hours

we just didn’t have time

LOTR extended edition: 11 hours 23 minutes

I do not understand. You could have watched it twice.

[–] pancakes@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh shit you're right, i guess we just didn't do the math correctly

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I have all the extended versions on DVD, but I never did get around to watching the Return of the King one.
