Oregonian, here. Yeah, we've got our loonies on this issue. Bunch of people convinced that the MMR vaccine causes autism because of that murderous fucker Andrew Wakefield.

Let’s not forget to thank Oprah Winfrey for platforming Playboy centerfold/medical doctor Jenny McCarthy and her anti-vax nonsense in the 2000s also.

You're thinking too small. Anti-vaxx is literally a billion dollar industry, held up not only by the grifters and snake oil sellers, famous or not, but also social media and tech companies, and even members and or funders of our governments:

Antivaxxers love to class themselves as small fish going against big pharma.

[-] ShareMySims@sh.itjust.works 12 points 2 months ago

Yup, like so many other exploitative and oppressive groups (conservatives, transphobes, racists, and so on), part of their schtick is playing the victim not only for the sake of their own cognitive dissonance, but also to use as a veil of innocence and obliviousness to hide their true intentions behind.

[-] Beaver@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 months ago

True, the oppressors are really good at controlling the narrative as they have resources to keep up the lies and half-truths.

Oh no, really?

[-] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

Don’t forget Larry King. That guy famously gave her a lot of airtime in front of a lot of eyeballs.

He was famous for be lazy AF and never fact checking his guests.

Any exemptions that aren't medical should be illegal. This is literally the most contagious disease on the planet and it kills kids. If kids are going to go to crowded places together, like schools, they should be required to be vaccinated against measles.

[-] Flocklesscrow@lemm.ee 23 points 2 months ago

And the other shoe is to hold the parents accountable.

No medical reason for exemption and little Johnny just got his class sick?

I dunno, you lose your right to vote or something. Or you have to be someone's butler.

[-] Drusas@fedia.io 12 points 2 months ago

Absolutely. And it should be considered manslaughter + neglect if a child dies because some parents refused to vaccinate.

[-] pdxfed@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Yes, but my spaghetti sky God says that vaccines make marinara taste bad so my reptilian brain is scared. What can I dooooo

[-] Drusas@fedia.io 1 points 2 months ago

Yes, and all of the people claiming this are supposed Christians. There is nothing in Christianity, either Catholic or Protestant, which precludes vaccination.

[-] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 9 points 2 months ago

This really is the simplest solution.

Also, the government can't really do a lot about it because of free speech laws, but like Google and Facebook and so on that gleefully spread anti-vax nonsense should be held accountable. Youtube could just refuse to host anti-vax videos. But I guess all they care about is money, and not enough people are angry enough to start hanging directors and c-suites yet.

[-] abfarid@startrek.website 38 points 2 months ago

Stop blaming vaccines! It's clearly caused by insufficient prayer!

[-] phorq@lemmy.ml 12 points 2 months ago

Ever since I started drinking Holy water twice a day I've been feeling so much more hydrated. Explain that science!

[-] abfarid@startrek.website 8 points 2 months ago

Lucky. Can't drink holy water cause it gives me a burning sensation. No idea why.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 26 points 2 months ago

The tragedy here is that these idiots are hurting kids. Like, hey, if you're a grown ass adult who's afraid of microchips, don't get vaxxed, I hope you catch whatever it is and fucking die. But doing this to your child is abuse.

[-] MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago

I'm not going to disagree with you. I just want to point out that if they manage to get their offspring infected when they also contract something... They have a chance of winning a Darwin award...

I'm not saying any of that is a good thing.

[-] 5oap10116@lemmy.world 21 points 2 months ago

Really hoping that this outbreak can knock some sense into these idiots.

Unfortunately that's not likely because it's hard to cure selfish dipshit diaease.

[-] ryan213@lemmy.ca 18 points 2 months ago

Can't live with autism if you're not alive.

[-] ravhall@discuss.online 14 points 2 months ago

Glad I don’t leave the house anymore.

[-] d00phy@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

“Hey, look at those leopards over there…”

[-] SapphironZA@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 months ago

Can we start a class action lawsuit in the international criminal court for the USA running a biological warfare program now?

[-] realcaseyrollins@thelemmy.club 7 points 2 months ago

Interesting.

Thankfully the vaccine has at least 90% efficacy if not more, so it's unlikely that unvaccinated people could still give you measles if you've been vaccinated. (https://www.cdc.gov/measles/about/index.html https://www.cdc.gov/measles/data-research/index.html)

[-] thetreesaysbark@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 months ago

Sucks for those who genuinely can't have it though, and rely on herd immunity

[-] jeffw@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

What most people don't realize is that childhood vaccinations don't actually last forever. It's been probably 30 years since I completed most of my vaccinations as a toddler, but when I got my most recent job (at a healthcare provider), they tested me and I needed boosters for some childhood vaccines due to losing immunity.

[-] SupraMario@lemmy.world -4 points 2 months ago

Vaccines totally don't work, the limes everyone was eating just didn't have enough juice in them.
