The real scary part is how many of them are using Java 8 and older.

I work for one of the unicorns of my country. 3/4 of the apps I maintain only work on java 8.

Legacy code op

[-] spudwart@spudwart.com 2 points 1 year ago

"Legacy code" Aka the fear of getting sued by Oracle for literal nonsense.

[-] DudeDudenson 3 points 1 year ago

More like "We don't know what it does or why it's there but it seems important so don't touch it"

[-] s_s@lemm.ee 9 points 1 year ago

Sounds like an inheritance problem.

It supports one of the best creative coding language, processing.

Here's another one: Companies depend on Adobe.

[-] onlinepersona@programming.dev 16 points 1 year ago

Governments depend on Microsoft.

[-] bAZtARd@feddit.de 11 points 1 year ago

Governments? Try critical infrastructure...

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

That is truly terrifying.

Usually these things are "or less". I see looking again that it wasn't actually said.

[-] xusontha@ls.buckodr.ink 3 points 1 year ago

That and: Companies are stuck with Adobe

[-] wols@lemm.ee 11 points 1 year ago

That number is like 20 years old.

Today it's around 60 billion.

True

I have to program in Java at my work and I absolutely hate it

[-] kogasa@programming.dev 5 points 1 year ago

What version of Java? 11 up is tolerable, modern Java is nice. Still see 8 in the wild though.

I'm surprised, I would love to work in Java 20. Do you have any particular pain points with it? Or is it just that you'd rather be using something else?

[-] nogrub@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

we programm sort algorithms in java right now and i can't really complain but i'm just a newbie

[-] newIdentity@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yeah. I just don't like Java

C# is better

I really do love some of the blunt and often accurate but not always replies from ChatGPT. I legit like it’s personality if that is what we can call it. Can be down right sassy at times.
