That appears to be a Macintosh 128K and I can confirm that the one my dad got in 1984 still functions. It's not really useful for much these days, but it does work, and you can play Math Blasters, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and it even has a monochrome paint program.

It's called "taking control over your life" and it has the cumbersome effect of giving the illusion that one has control over one's own life. A common phrase would be "If you just worked harder you wouldn't be so poor." There is solace in the power over one's own life, so much so that people ignore that this power is getting eroded day by day. Because admitting this is very scary, even moreso if one has people depending on them.
As somebody who got made redundant last week and is facing the shit heap of a job market right now.

What was your job?
I worked in planning, I won’t say for who as I can’t other than to new employers based on the package I got.
It’s a field very close to being replaced by AI, if it gets to a point where it understands employees propensity to work different patterns and times then it will just replace people.
Hence I’m looking to now change careers before that happens, but starting again after more than 15 years is harder than I thought and I thought it would be hard.
Hang in there. I know it's just stupid words on a screen, but I'm juuuust on the other side of a painful, painful fucking stretch. I thought it'd never end. I'm scared to even say it, but I think my new boss MIGHT actually care about her employees and view them as people? knock on wood

Can someone explain me how pensions work? Isn’t that some sort of 401k that is tied to the company and you lose access to when you switch companies?
It depends on the organization.
I'm part of the Texas Municipal Retirement System. I put 7% of my salary into TMRS, and th city double-matches that, so I've got 21% going into the pension annually.
When I retire, the pension pays me according to what I put in and what I make the last 5 years of my career. Each member city that I've worked at contributes to my pension until I doe according to how long I've worked there.
The biggest thing to understand about a pension versus a 401k is that you can't cash out on a pension. When I retire, I'll get paid the rest of my life and even get raises, but I won't have a huge pile of money I can pull out or give to my heirs.
On the flip side, I don't run the risk of outliving my savings.

Fascinating patterns in the micro and the macro. The beautiful sound of the ocean. The intrigue of the mountains. The solitude of the desert. The sun. The moon and the stars. Space. Friendship. Language. Community. Given all that, how amazing it is to work a shitty job for a shitty boss during this incredible experience of being alive in whatever the fuck all of this is. I’m ALIVE. Hear me roar, void. Hear me and see me, witness me use my limited time wisely writing nonsense reports, creating spreadsheets, and working unpaid overtime. Witness me cherish the wonder of the world by sitting in an office all day, returning home in stressful traffic, and having no time for friends and family. This is it. This is why we exist. I love it.
