Was cruising with my riding group in Virginia, when I took a curve too fast, too wide. Ended up in the hospital, with a broken ankle and badly bruised shoulder.

It could've been worse. FAR worse. Thankfully, I subscribe to ATGATT, and made it out with relatively minor injuries. If you, or anyone you know, thinks it's OK to skimp on riding gear, let this be the reminder you need to hear: it isn't, and WHEN you crash, not if, you will regret not wearing proper gear.

Stay safe on the roads, Lemmy riders.

Glad you’re ok.

I want to humbly add a suggestion for full helmets. Or at least adequate and approved helmets.

Not a rider, rather one who peels people off the road. Helmets save lives. Full face helmets save lives.

Damn right they do. I got out with no head damage despite rolling and sliding 50 feet because I had a good helmet. Gonna need a replacement now, along with new pants, but it's a big part of why I survived.

It could have been much worse than shitting your pants. I'm glad that you're okay.

[–] Dogiedog64@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Didn't shit my pants lmfao, they cut them off me.

[–] monsieur_hackerman@programming.dev 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I would have shat your pants. I'm also glad you're okay

[–] Dogiedog64@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

I'll shit your pants right now 👀👀👀

I pressure wash people off roads and so far everyone who's made it to the ambulance has been wearing full gear.

I don't care how stupid I looked on a Bajaj in a full helmet, I wore that shit every ride. If I want some wind in my face I'll get a fucking fan.

Dress for the slide, not the ride.

ATGATT, my beloved.

Here from All, what's ATGATT?

Glad you're ok!

ATGATT

All the gear, all the time. Had to google it but now I'm a fan of the expression.

Don’t dress for the ride, dress for the slide

[–] neatobuilds@lemmy.today 13 points 5 days ago (1 children)

But more importantly how is the bike

[–] Dogiedog64@lemmy.world 12 points 5 days ago

Damaged. Probably runs, but I'm not gonna try it. Let the shop sort it out.

ATGATT because I secretly still wanna be a power ranger.

I took a spill recently and those cordura pants held up. I was extremely suprised. Bent the handle bars though. 😮‍💨

You got out alive and intact, call that a win and move on. More rides to be had!

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

Wishing you a speedy recovery

[–] dan1101@lemm.ee 4 points 5 days ago

This is what worries me about riding in groups, I think I would be more distracted and more careless.

Heal. Learn. Dust off and get back out there.

[–] shittydwarf@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 5 days ago

Damn dude glad you're ok, also glad you didn't go through that fence yikes

Glad you're all right (more or less), thank you for sharing and using the opportunity to promote safe practices. Hope you enjoy a swift recovery and return to the road when you're ready.

That sucks, how fast were you going? seems really unfortunate that you broke bones on a smallish crusier.

[–] Ledivin@lemmy.world 12 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

People regularly die from collisions on pedal bikes. You don't have to be going very fast at all.

[–] Dogiedog64@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

I will say we were going fast for the road. It was marked 30, we were going 40-50. Would've been fine had there been more of a shoulder. Unfortunately, being in rural Virginia, the transition from Road to Gravel was immediate. I'm absolutely a dumbass for going that fast on that road, but you live and you learn.
