Jesus could you imagine stubbing your toe on that in the middle of the night

[–] Jumpingspiderman@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Well, for one thing, I'd not be walking into that wall anyway.

[–] skisnow@lemmy.ca 19 points 2 days ago

I scraped my knuckles just looking at that

[–] letsgo2themall@lemmy.world 26 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I think this is less "male" and more "poverty".

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago

You can probably find a used nightstand for free easier than finding/buying those blocks to haul to your apartment.

[–] fluffy@feddit.org 5 points 2 days ago

An iPhone and an MagSafe charger is not poverty …

[–] tacosplease@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I like it except would definitely have to put those little round felt pads for chair feet under it to protect the floor.

[–] Captain_Patchy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

And pad the corners for my elbows!

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (6 children)

Everything seemed fine until I saw the Zyn stand.

First thought in a male brain seeing this: "wow, practical".

Then i saw the text.

[–] AoxoMoxoA@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

My first thought was : that is a stout table, not going anywhere, modular , hmm 🤔

[–] Bgugi@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"Modular storage system. Our proprietary ceramic material comes from natural mineral and reclaimed resources. Modern industrial aesthetic leverages influences from brutalist architecture. Available as individual components or engineered systems. Call to schedule a consultation."

The dead plant is a nice touch.

[–] Tylerdurdon@lemmy.world 32 points 3 days ago (5 children)

It's plastic. Available from Ickea for 5.99 and called Schlorpobrotto.

I have problems with it.

For one, all the edges are scratchy. You run the risk of roughing your hands every time you reach in to get stuff.

For another, I (and my boyfriend, who I had the urge to spritz with a bottle of water when I saw this out of reflex) have ADHD, which is rough for proprioception. In other words, we aren't so great at judging the relationship in space between ourselves and furniture, and bang into it a lot. In other words, when we inevitably punch this cinderblock trying to reach in to grab something, or bang a hand down on it just trying to reach for a phone, we're going to skin our hands and that's blood we don't need on random surfaces.

Finally, as someone else pointed out, when we inevitably bang our feet on it, now we're lookin' at a broken toe.

(For the record, I told the boyfriend I saw this and almost spritzed him with water, and he laughed.)

Is your boyfriend a cat

Ah yes, concrete dust everywhere in my bedroom... delicious.

[–] Captain_Patchy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

The zyn counteracts the silicosis : /

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 17 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (4 children)

Yeah, seriously, make that in wood and it would be a hit.

The most popular shelves are just a bunch of cubes, one side open, slapped together.

I just sleep on the floor in a circle of boxes with my things in them. Get on my level.

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 93 points 3 days ago

You may not like it, but this is what peak Buy It For Life looks like.

[–] Godnroc@lemmy.world 74 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Amateur hour! The cinder blocks are all aligned and could more easily tip over; stagger those joints! The top will scratch your phone; put a piece of wood, cardboard, or an old shirt on top to protect it. Also, throw away that phone box, that shit ain't collectable.

[–] Oka@sopuli.xyz 41 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Maybe I'll need that phone box in the future

Cinderblocks are literally just legos for adults. Not because it's more mature or anything, but because it's cheaper.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 25 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (3 children)

Except, you know what I discovered just LOVES to live in cinder blocks? For instance the stack I had on my balcony? Black Widow Spiders, that's who. Whole families of them, each in a section, with egg sacs.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 43 points 3 days ago (1 children)

so...you're telling me you built a condo for black minorities and now you want to evict them?

just calling a shoe a shoe here, but....

thats a good looking house plant.

[–] sexy_peach@feddit.org 19 points 2 days ago

Amazing brutalist aesthetic

[–] mapmyhike@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (4 children)

My grandmother had a stack of these in her basement and had them all crisscrossed. It is where she stashed her money. She claimed it was fireproof, she didn't have to memorize a combination and nobody would take the time to pull them all apart if they didn't know what was in them.

looks fine too me (i use cardboard box pieces as shelves)

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

remember the days when you could find giant wooden wire spools to use as furniture? Those were better days. They even had holes predrilled in the middle if you wanted to use it outside as a patio table. They were much better tables than the crap thats on sale today.

[–] hayali99@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

in my country from spring to fall banned to walk in forests because of fire risks, in winter everywhere is deadly cold(!) or wet and if you live in city good luck to find a workshop to work

As a woman, this is neat, but it needs paint. Lol

[–] SgtAStrawberry@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I would say that paint depends on what style the room is overall.

Looking at the bed for comparison some paint would be needed, however comparing to the shelf it might be an industrial looking and if that is the case paint wouldn't be necessary and cinder blocks can fitt into it.

In conclusion, we need more pictures of the room to determine paint or no paint and colour.

Furniture maker here: Would a night stand with open cubbies on the front like that be popular? That would be fairly easy to build out of wood.

[–] satanmat@lemmy.world 37 points 3 days ago (6 children)

Honestly yeah.

The ability to have your mess slightly better organized, and cheap.

Yeah
