If it was ethically possible, a capybara. I'd just hangout in my own water and stone feature with my chill friend.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 weeks ago

My partner took me to a place where we got to hang out with all sorts of animals, capybara included. They live up to their rep, for suuuuure. They just let me pet and hug them, and they loved being hand fed.

My favorites were binturong though. They had two babies they just let loose in a room with us. They were crawling all over our heads and bodies. I cried. I loved them so much.

Porcupines were also WAY more chill than I expected. I was scared to touch their quills, but they were happy to let me pet them and feed them carrot. They were pretty much as chill as capys!

Tiger. There's no other acceptable answer.

However, it would have to be a very chill tiger, because I can't have it eating my chickens

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 6 points 2 weeks ago

Get an elderly one

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Personally, after seeing all the pictures of pet tigers in the US, I've been put off anyone having a pet tiger.

Cool idea but it doesn't seem right.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I agree in the real world.

But this is fun and games, so I get to pretend that the tiger would be happy, enjoy being a pet (those two aren't inherently the same), and safe completely.

None of the big cats should ever be a pet, even cheetahs that have sometimes been kept and bred as hunting animals. Hell, no wild animal should be a pet at this point. Domestication is a massive undertaking when done intentionally. And we've got plenty of domesticated animals as it is, plenty of captive bred species that should more than satisfy the folks that just have to have something not domesticated (and likely can't be) and exotic that's a realistic "pet". So taking a wild animal that's in no way realistic is just stupid.

A red panda. I'd be happy with just being able to pet it occasionally to be honest.

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 3 points 2 weeks ago

Alternative Tree Foxies are incredibly cute.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I love cats, but in a fantasy world I'd like a horse. I'd have to be mega rich and have someone care for the horse, but it would be cool to be able to go out for rides when I fancied it

[–] Lembot_0002@lemm.ee 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Brick. It doesn't eat much and can defend you. It is also very quiet. Brick is the most ninjaish pet. And everyone knows that ninjas are cool.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Good point they are very easy pets. Hard to train though

[–] Lembot_0002@lemm.ee 2 points 2 weeks ago

Sit/lay/stay/be_quiet can be taught literally in seconds! Most pets aren't able to learn that in their whole lifetime.

I want a big ol' grizzly bear to cuddle. :3

More realistically, a cow would be cool.

Cool! They're pretty cute!

Also consider highland cows if you're looking at cuddle quotient like with the grizzly. When they're young their fur is so fluffy (sometimes curly) and it grows really long. Though, I don't know about overall coarseness and you gotta be wary of the long horns on the adults, hehe. Though I've come across some trad pets that have pretty coarse fur and people still cuddle them, so...shrug

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

There's a farm I have to pass sometimes with a single long horned highland in a pen outside the farmhouse with some goats and sheep, and I always want to stop and see if he'll let me pet him. He looks chill.

[–] Penny7@lemm.ee 1 points 6 days ago

That's awesome!!! I'm putting the thought that you'll be able pet them to into the universe.

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Bear. In case I meet a man in the woods.

(The animal choice is serious. The subsequent sentence is not.)

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 2 points 2 weeks ago

Someone who made the right choice in the viral hashtag.

You could destroy your enemies with him

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

And your friends. And passing strangers. Cars. Trucks. Tanks. Ships. Buildings. Small mountains. Large mountains. …

[–] Zier@fedia.io 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Don't forget Tokyo! He's actually very well behaved if you just let him sleep peacefully in the ocean.

I was thinking of this recently after having dealt with rodents on my yard. But it’s illegal in my area to own one and that’s probably for the best. I hear them at night outside sometimes but I have never seen one. I think I saw one flying during the day because the wingspan was huge and there was absolutely no sound as it went from one tree to another. All I saw was this thing with huge whitish gray wings open them wide and silently fly from one tree to another as I got near and called out to our dogs. I think we frightened it and it was trying to stay away out of sight during the day time hours.

Absolutely amazing, majestic creatures.

[–] Frjttr@lemm.ee 4 points 2 weeks ago

Many owls are completely silent when flying 🥰

In my country it’s legal to own one only if you have a falconry license, which is quite expensive to get.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 3 points 2 weeks ago

Great choice 👌

[–] remon@ani.social 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

A giant squid. Just to be the first.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Good idea. What would you call them?

[–] remon@ani.social 6 points 2 weeks ago

Squidward ofc.

I'd love to have ferrets. They are illegal where I am, but more importantly I couldn't afford to take care of multiple ferrets, which is problematic with how social they are. They are soooo cute and fun though. ❤️

Raven!

Loved the Mortimer the Raven books when I was a kid and have wanted a corvid companion ever since.

Corvids are super cool!

!corvids@sopuli.xyz :)

[–] SharkEatingBreakfast@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 weeks ago

It's actually legal in my state to own a crocodile as a pet with no permits or anything, but I don't have the time, space, or adequate habitat for such a critter. Ignoring that Craigslist post was soooo difficult..

My kid is absolutely hurting to have a Giant African Snail, but they're illegal here.

...go figure.

[–] ThraawnSolo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 weeks ago

I remember in elementary school begging my mom for a komodo dragon. Now, many years later...I just want a bison.

[–] theblips@lemm.ee 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Honestly, just a regular black cat. I can't because of terrible allergies

Ocelot would be a cool one.

[–] MossyFeathers@pawb.social 3 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Extant: opossum

Extinct: some form of troodontid or other theropod

Mythical: dragon

[–] TwoBeeSan@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Opposum familiar please

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 2 points 2 weeks ago

Ooh. If we're going with extinct, I'd love a pet trilobyte myself.
