Laura Loomer lamented that the new pope ‘is anti-Trump, anti-MAGA, pro-open Borders, and a total Marxist like Pope Francis,’ adding that it’s ‘GROSS’ that he now leads the Catholic Church

It didn’t take long for right-wing media figures and MAGA provocateurs to cry out in rage over the election of Robert Prevost as Pope Leo XIV after it was revealed that he’d publicly criticized JD Vance and expressed sympathy for immigrants and George Floyd.

Despite feeling national pride over the fact that the Chicago-born Prevost has become the first American pope in history, conservative pundits and Trump loyalists fumed over the “WOKE MARXIST POPE” and complained that he is “worse than Francis,” referencing the previous pontiff known for his progressive values.

Even before the “dark horse” American cardinal was elected the 267th pope, former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon warned about Prevost’s views, claiming that he would be a poor choice for the MAGA movement.

If MAGAts don't like him, that gives me a lot of faith in him.

[–] idealpink@feddit.nu 5 points 4 hours ago

This response just tells me it is the correct pope for the job

I hope the Swiss Guard are on their toes. I guarantee there are crazy fascists only too willing to try their hand at assassination.

MAGA meltdown? No way. They melt harder than a slice of cheese on a patty

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 points 45 minutes ago

molten fake american cheese.

[–] selkiesidhe@lemm.ee 18 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I knew it-- just KNEW IT-- the moment we learned the new Pope was American, I knew the MAGAt moron brigade would immediately be expecting the guy to be some gob-slobbering jackass racist like them, expecting him to start licking drumpf's toes.

The fact the Pope isn't going to be ordered around by King Damp Pants is going to be a talking point for Faux "news" Entertainment for a while lol

[–] TheKMAP@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 9 hours ago

I was expecting it, too. I thought the AI picture of Trump as pope meant he had pulled strings to get an American, and was planning on combining that with his Deus Vult - tattooed secretary of defense to start a literal Crusade.

[–] AllHailTheSheep@sh.itjust.works 9 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

losing it at the fact that most evangelical Christian assholes are shocked when the Catholic Pope has different views

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 points 44 minutes ago

shouldnt evangelical have thier own "megapastor"

[–] opus86@lemmy.today 11 points 11 hours ago

The pope doesn't like evil? Huh, imagine that.

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 40 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I love how they lost their shit about an American speaking Italian, in Italy, to a shit load of Italians.

The American nationalism has truly rotted their brains.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 points 44 minutes ago

he should speak latin to really make thier minds explode.

I just want to add. Anyone that ACTUALLY FOLLOWS the teachings of the bible, cannot with good conscious support Donald Trump.

[–] phar@lemmy.ml 6 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I think you mean actually follows the teachings of jesus. If you actually follow the teachings of the Bible you probably actually would be good with donald. You would be good with slavery. The Bible is a really f***** up thing

[–] RedditIsDeddit@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago

Fair enough

[–] ShotDonkey@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago
[–] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 12 points 15 hours ago (3 children)

I would be surprised if there are more than a couple hundred people in the US who have ever actually read the bible.

[–] ijedi1234@sh.itjust.works 7 points 9 hours ago

My favorite part is when Jesus had a "spirited debate" with capitalists selling stuff in the Temple.

[–] KingPorkChop@lemmy.ca 10 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Most people don't read the entire bible and churches try to avoid it by doing "bible study" where they cherry pick sections that sound good. They avoid the bits about god allowing owning slaves, god telling his people to kill everyone in the area but keep the virgin young girls as rape slaves, and all the other juicy bits in the bible.

It's a horrible book and the god character is a monster.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 5 points 7 hours ago

It’s clearly divided into an older section and a newer section, and the basic definition of Christian is the newer section defining empathy, caring, accepting of all the people. Sure there’s still some effed up stuff but what do you want from a 1500 year old book: the basic message of the new part is love

It’s more accurate to say these people are not Christian even if the use the name. They do not follow the teachings they proclaim, and have more in common with the Pharisees, the oppressors

[–] RedditIsDeddit@lemmy.world 9 points 15 hours ago

That's just silly. Many millions likely have. But I get your point.

[–] 1995ToyotaCorolla@lemmy.world 49 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Woke Marxist Pope? Well shit, I just might start going to church again

[–] Sine_Fine_Belli@lemmy.world 6 points 11 hours ago

Same here lol

[–] pornpornporn@lemmynsfw.com 86 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

MAGA hating the new pope is the biggest compliment he could possibly get

[–] LadyButterfly@lemmy.world 17 points 18 hours ago

Yep I'd be crying with joy if I were him

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 33 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Maybe the church knows better than to have a concordat with the nazis this time.

Maybe.

[–] KingPorkChop@lemmy.ca 4 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. There are still a large number of unpunished child raping fuckers under their protection.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago

Yes, but that doesn't have much bearing on whether they have another concordat with nazis or not.

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 13 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (12 children)

Are we talking about the one that died or his new replacement?

Edit: its about the new Pope (Pope Leo) not the old pope (pope Francis). Apparently the dead progressive pope was replaced with another progressive pope. Cool

Thinking a second about this, he literally pwned MAGA

The entire conservative line of thought is backed by Christianity and American exceptionalism, and now there comes an American pope and tells "You're not following the God's word". That's a damn checkmate.

Wonder how many MAGA supporters, many of which are devout Christians, will start questioning their beliefs.

Also, lol, a Marxist Pope is top comedy.

[–] InputZero@lemmy.world 59 points 21 hours ago (5 children)

They won't question their Christian beliefs for a single second because they didn't have any in the first place. They'll turn their backs and say "The Pope went woke," still call themselves godly Christians, and continue to spread hate. During that whole time they will never question whether or not they're Christian, they'll just hate the Pope too.

Christianity the religion and Christianity the political platform are different things. The con requires you to believe they are the same thing.
