About 25 years ago, when someone put a pint glass behind one of my tires in the club parking lot. It didn't cause any damage, but I lost interest.

Last weekend went to a sex positive techno club, did drugs, and didn’t sleep.

Never been. But I went to enough bars in my 20’s that would make any alcoholic proud.

Oh yeah…. I’m an alcoholic. The last time I stepped foot in an actual bar not tied to a restaurant was 20ish years ago. Bars made sense back then until the state banned smoking in bars.

Clubs were never my thing, not my choice in music for the most part. But towards the end of my drinking career I would have gone anywhere if there was alcohol.

There was a certain kind of discreet club that SO and I used to attend regularly, but it kind of fell apart during the Great Lockdown of 2020 and the subsequent COVID-19 management practices.

Dance clubs I never went to, at any point in my life really because I hate with the burning passion of a thousand suns most dance club music.

Well, not a lot of seals in my area, so never.

What? Oh not that clubbing!

Bad jokes aside, it has been a long time. I wanna say 2006? It was after the disability piano got dropped on my head like a bad cartoon for sure. Might have been as recently as 2009 though, because that span was not conducive to good memory formation. Somewhere in there though.

Even that one wasn't so much clubbing as going to a single place and enjoying a drag show with friends. It was, however, a club and there was dancing as well as very light drinking (on my part, everyone else was lit lol). I even got a fully clothed lap dance from one of the performers, which was fun as hell.

It was also a very healing thing, psychologically. I'd gone through a painful breakup post disability, was feeling unattractive and unwanted in my new body (the breakup wasn't because of the disability, just badly timed, but it still hit hard). Going out, getting hit on a little, catching up with people I used to know from my bouncing days at the club, it was very fulfilling.

I'm intrigued. Are you underage? Live in Antarctica? Morally opposed? Or is it that I'm totally out of touch with young people? I suspect it's the last one

Not OP, but from what I've heard, clubbing generally involves loud music, ethanol consumption, and crowds of people, none of which I find enjoyable.

Can't speak for today's youth but in my day it was all about house parties.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What age bracket are you in? I'm mid 40s

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 1 points 22 hours ago

early forties

[–] moonlight@fedia.io 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I haven't either, despite being in a city and my 20s. I think plenty of young people still go clubbing, but I think I'm too anxious/neurodivergent for it.

I see the appeal, but I get overwhelmed by enviroments like that unless I'm very drunk (which I want to do less), I can't dance, and I don't know how to talk to people :(

I'll occasionally go to a bar with friends, but it has to be a quieter spot with somewhere we can all sit and hang out.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm neurodiverse too! What condition do you have?

[–] moonlight@fedia.io 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

adhd/autism, only officially diagnosed with the former, though. Although audhd is really its own distinct neurotype. I think one of the biggest things for me in this case is the audio processing issue (which makes it difficult to interact with people in loud environments. loud bars are bad enough, I don't think I could handle clubs)

What about you?

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 2 points 23 hours ago

I hear you there! Trying to pick conversations out when 2 people talk at once makes me wanna scream. Im diagnosed with dyspraxia.

I was an awkward nerd when I was younger and never went to any of those things now I'm older and still don't want to or know anyone who would. I also don't use alcohol which I believe is a big part of those places.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't drink either I'm really not a fan

[–] ZDL@ttrpg.network 1 points 16 hours ago

I'll make up the difference for both of you as a service to all the craft distilleries that would otherwise be going under.

I'm 59. Last time I went clubbing was probably 20 years ago. Or I attempted to; the club wouldn't let me in essentially because I was a bloke pushing 40. The group of younger girls I was with had already gone in without me and I was left stranded outside like a lemon. Went home and swore I'd never do that again.

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Decades ago, before i realized that there were much better places to spend a Saturday evening. Baby seals are the only creatures that hate clubbing more than I do, and only marginally so.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's just so noisy and everything is sticky...

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

They're only sticky if they're fresh out of water, and if you get good at clubbing they don't make much noise either.

Seriously, though, I think the sticky floor at clubs is because of very sugary drinks being common in a place where people move around a lot.

I have a feeling I'm going to add some balance to the comments here. I was in a nightclub last night (yes Monday I know). The time before that was Friday.

[–] shinigamiookamiryuu@lemm.ee 5 points 1 day ago

That's the neat part, I don't.

[–] klemptor@startrek.website 3 points 1 day ago

I've never been clubbing! Wish I had at least once or twice when I was young, but I was pretty serious in my early twenties. I guess I could still go if I wanted to, but I doubt I'd enjoy it now.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I just worked out it was 9 years ago for me. I'm even older than I thought...

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 2 points 1 day ago

Try 30 years +. It's just a waste of time and money. Did house parties for awhile. A couple of block parties over a decade ago. A Superbowl party a few years ago, but it was to mingle with neighbors, not the alcohol or entertainment. I was extremely bored.

[–] Zero22xx@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago

Probably around 15 years ago. Although, the alternative clubs I went to were kinda something between a club and a pub, I'd say. Definitely not nearly as tightly packed and awful as dance clubs, which I never enjoyed. So, within those 15 years I've been to alternative pubs and small gigs here and there, which maybe counts as the same thing. So the last time I went to a gig was probably 5 or 6 years ago. I'm actually itching to start going out to gigs again though, just need to not be broke all the time.

Not sure if any of that really counts as 'clubbing' though. An alternative club and a dance club are completely different experiences. And as far as dance clubs go, I went once or twice with friends and hated it and mostly just found a chair or couch or something and waited to go home.

I've never been a fan of much top 40 or dance music, those aren't my people and between the way too packed conditions, the music, obnoxious DJs yelling on the mic and smoke machines and shit, dance clubs just give me a headache.

A couple of years ago, unless you include post-band night as a club. In that case, it would be a few months ago. I'm GenX, and clubbing was pretty big for us.

Probably 20 years ago
