Please for the love of all that is holy, stay faithful to the original.

Don't add any of the loot box, leveled weapon / enemy crap that the newer titles have.

Black Flag is one of my favorite PS4 games, and I'd love to get my GF the remake.

[–] Blackout@fedia.io 23 points 2 weeks ago

I wouldn't mind more sea shanties and dogs to pet.

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I'd be okay with them adding some stuff. A bit of multiplayer or more boats. Assasins creed might be the exception to the rule but old games generally dont age well. I'm all for adding (non predatory) content. It would be a dream come true if they added mod support for instance.

All enemies are now composed entirely of a proprietary material, Ubi-sponge. Absorb three times as many hits as the next best brand!

[–] JayGray91@piefed.social 5 points 2 weeks ago

I have zero faith in current Ubisoft. Having negative expectations will allow myself be positively surprised.

[–] lath@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Surprise! It was Skull & Bones in disguise!

[–] Weirdfish@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Oh, oh no.... you are probably right

[–] uninvitedguest@lemmy.ca 31 points 2 weeks ago (6 children)

Haven't played the original, but why does this game need remade?

[–] ddplf@szmer.info 20 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Try it and you'll tell. Peak AC to me

[–] alsimoneau@lemmy.ca -2 points 2 weeks ago

Rogue was better.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca -3 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

That’s 3

Black Flag is a pirate game that they slapped the name on and loosely tied some gameplay into

[–] eRac 22 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They didn't take a pirate game and slap the AC name on it. They took an AC game with ship mechanics, dialed down the assassin, and dialed up the ships.

It's a direct iteration on AC3 in every way.

[–] Zoot@reddthat.com -3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

If you liked AC, then Black Flag wasn't it. I personally loved 3, but wasn't the biggest fan of the boats and pirate stuff. Black Flag only made all of that worse.

Everyone's got their own opinions, but to say AC Black Flag isn't just a pirate game with AC slapped on it isn't being very honest.

[–] Sas@beehaw.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

To me it's more of an AC than the rpgs that came after

[–] PraiseTheSoup@lemm.ee 5 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

AC3 is literally the worst mainline AC game, and I've played them all. And all you ubi haters don't worry, I only paid for the very first one.

[–] alsimoneau@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

It's so diluted, the pacing sucks. The whole character switcheroo is dumb since all the promotionnal stuff had Connor on it.

[–] callouscomic@lemm.ee 0 points 2 weeks ago

AC3 is literally one of the best.

[–] shadowedcross@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

3 is definitely not peak.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 19 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

For money, they already remastered the ones before it

[–] CitizenKong@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

One of the best of the series and will probably look massively improved visually with updating lighting, physics and 4k textures (not that it looked bad in 2013, far from it)

[–] TallonMetroid@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Gotta milk the cash cow.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

It needs a remake because Ubisoft spent 10 years developing a mega expensive AAAA pirate game ... with the gameplay and monetization and time wasting of a mobile gacha game... and this (and other things) nearly bankrupted Ubisoft when it utterly flopped.

Basically every prominent game reviewer either indirectly or directly said 'wtf, this is nothing like an actual pirate game, how is this possible, you idiots made black flag, just do that again with some tweaks and/or new content.'

... So Ubisoft is now in ultra conservative 'make only winning bets' mode, now that they've... kind of functionally split into two different Ubisofts, following a shareholder and board member revolt...

So they're just remaking the pirate game they already made, because they know people did actually like that one.

tl:dr, it needs to be remade because Ubisoft has no concept of how to do anything new that works, they've realized that, and are now trying to stop hemmoraghing money.

[–] breecher@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

Because the original doesn't really have a lot of predatory monetisation. They are having GTAO wet dreams thinking about how to monetise their most popular game of the franchise with the excuse of doing it as a remake.

[–] MeaanBeaan@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Why remake it though? It's not THAT old. And it's not like Ubisoft games look substantially better now than they did back then. Black Flag is probably the AC game from the older AC games that holds up the best. The water specifically from that game is still impressive today and the pirate ship battles have still never gotten better than that.

[–] rayquetzalcoatl@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

To insert additional monetisation

[–] pinball_wizard@lemmy.zip -3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Why remake it though?

~~I know it doesn't run (trivially) on SteamDeck.~~ (Sorry, poor wording. I recall it wasn't SteamDeck verified, last time I had my finger on the "buy" button.)

I know I'll be buying a copy when any version releases with a SteamDeck verified badge.

So I imagine the conversation:

"Boss, getting this verified is going to be as much work at a full remaster!"

"Okay. So what?"

"So what?"

"Does anyone here not want to spend months updating this fantastic title that will probably sell like hot cakes?"

"..."

"So let's do this."

Edit: Or it could be the micro-transaction thing others mentioned. I hate that it's more probable. I guess I could wait and emulate the original later, if so.

[–] MeaanBeaan@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Interesting, what issue are you having on steam deck? I didn't have any problems on my deck when I played it a handful of months ago. There was just a stupid issue where Ubisoft made me sign into the launcher every time I wanted to play. There was an offline workaround though that worked fine I found on protondb. After that I was able to lock it to 40 with some settings tweaks. Played great.

[–] pinball_wizard@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Interesting, what issue are you having on steam deck?

I didn't have any issue, I just hesitated to buy it without the "verified" badge. Thanks for the info! That's exciting. I've been wanting to play Black Flag.

Edit: I see my wording above was misleading. I will update.

[–] MeaanBeaan@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Ah, that makes sense. I can understand being hesitant to pay money for something when valve says they're not sure about a game. But honestly, the verified system is practically worthless at this point. Checking ProtonDB instead usually gives me more accurate info on a game's compatibility and people will often provide fixes for games that don't work perfectly out of the box.

Regardless, happy sailing my man. 🏴‍☠️

[–] Brokkr@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Is this just going to be Black Flag using the Skull and Bones platform? The snake is eating it's own tail now.

[–] tuckerm@feddit.online 3 points 2 weeks ago

The ship section is just going to be the entirety of Skull and Bones, bolted on to this game. It'll just swap the entire game to the Skull and Bones executable. They will recuperate their money on that game! It's only a failure if you give up!

[–] callouscomic@lemm.ee 5 points 2 weeks ago

Ubi execs probably: "See! SEE! Look at Oblivion. They don't even care about fixing the bugs. Quick! Leak that we're redoing Black Flag and we'll rush it!"

[–] ZeroHora@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Remove all the outside animus parts, remove the stupid plot point that I don't fucking care about modern assassin's vs templars and the end of the world yada yada, while you're at it, remove any mention of assassin and templars, I just want to be a pirate.

[–] WolfLink@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Sea of Thieves is the game for you

[–] ZeroHora@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 weeks ago

0 interest in a "game as a service"

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

Something tells me this is gonna be Ubisoft’s last stand, either this is a success or they go away as a company.

I like both outcomes.
