was detained Friday at Harry Reid International Airport but was allowed to leave the country without a deportation order

Was he already at the airport leaving the country before being detained and asked to leave the country? This feels like just trying to pump up reporting numbers.

He was on like day 30 of a 90-day visa and was heading to his scheduled flight out of the country. Afaik, they had no reason to pick him up, they just like sitting around in the air conditioning to pick people up at airports and courthouses instead of chasing them across fields or something more exercise-y like that.

If he was on day 30 of 90 why was ICE saying he "overstayed"? Is this some kind of technicality not mentioned or is ICE straight up lying (as usual)?

See you’d make a good reporter. Those are the right questions.

Just not a good corporate news reporter. As we see.

No idea. He entered on an Italian passport (he has dual Italian-Senegalese citizenship, and they referred to him as "Seringe Khabane Lame, 25, a citizen of Italy" in a press release), so he should have up to 90 days in the US without a problem.

To me, it feels like some ICE thug trying to meet his quota while doing the minimum amount of work.

It's kinda like Homer Simpson and the creepy shopkeeper:

"He 'deported' a guy for no valid reason, probably because it was easy and he's a lazy amoral fuck who knows the fascists in charge are just looking at AI summaries and don't really give a shit who gets deported or how"

"That's bad"

"But the guy was leaving anyway and avoided a deportation order that would cause him problems later, and ICE spending its time on this might've meant one less 'real' deportation instead"

"That's good"

"But the media coverage of deporting a famous person arbitrarily with impunity helps sow fear of the regime, which is what it wants"

"That's bad."

Yeah. Part of Trump's problem with deportation is that he is throwing away the law to get numbers up because the Biden administration deported a lot more people while adhering to the law.

Trump is trying to use immigration as a reason to set aside habeus corpus, but even then his administration is really bad at deportation.

Because he's black.

Edit: Skimming. Posted entirely wrong takeaway.

New takeaway? Just being bullies.

Not the case here. The article has the details.

Isn't it because the -frothing at the mouth- "influencer" bo loudon 'declared' Khaby Lame overstayed his visa already and must be arrested so bo notified the nazi's, err regime, like a proper collaborator should?

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I have no idea who Bo Loudon is, and I believe my life is richer for it.

[–] Dragomus@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

I only heard the name in relation to this case... Read stuff about the person but have no interest to check it out.

[–] CalipherJones@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

He's not a violent criminal, of course that's who the authorities would choose to target.

[–] Moonrise2473@feddit.it 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I do not understand. Italian citizen get 90 days from arrival. He arrived one month ago, so he's not overstaying?

Or when someone has black skin they apply different rules?

They likely used the “you’re planning on making videos while you’re here. Since you make videos for work, that means you’re illegally working here without a work visa” excuse. Same reason photographers, musicians, (and freelancers in general) need to be careful about how they talk to customs; If customs discovers that they’re a professional and are going to make music/take photos/etc while in the country, they’ll start rumbling about illegal work without a visa, and even threaten to confiscate work equipment like personal instruments, cameras, etc…

Even if it would otherwise be totally normal for people to take photos while on vacation, the fact that it’s a professional photographer on vacation suddenly makes it work related. And the same likely happened here. He probably posted a video that he made while in the country, so ICE swooped in while screeching about work visas.

Aaah capitalism. If someone is not extracting wealth from you at every millisecond, they roll out the paddy wagon to start the beatings

[–] mysticpickle@lemmy.ca 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm much less concerned about Tiktokers getting deported than I am about all the people that harvest the food we eat 😨

[–] KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 days ago

Yeah I was thinking about this with the news of an ICE raid at a meat packing factory. Let’s see how the cultists feel when their meat prices skyrocket.

[–] floo@retrolemmy.com 26 points 2 days ago

I’m sure President ThinkSkin DrinkBleach won’t have any problem with that at all…
