The U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a statement claiming Chavez Jr has an arrest warrant back in Mexico for his alleged involvement in trafficking firearms, explosives and ammunition while he’s also being accused of being an affiliate of the Sinaloa Cartel, which has been designated as a terrorist organization under President Donald Trump.

So is the Mexican government alleging that he's a member of the Sinaloa Cartel, or is the Trump admin alleging that? Because the Trump admin has a track record of making those claims without evidence as an excuse to kidnap people.

Given recent performances I think most boxing fans won't mind seeing him being escorted back across the border

Am I the only one who thinks this is unsportsmanlike to say? If someone is worth fighting against inside the ring, then they're worth fighting with outside the ring.

[–] breecher@sh.itjust.works 9 points 12 hours ago

Unsportsmanlike is putting it too mildly. It is genuinely a fascist thing to say.

[–] habs@lemmy.sdf.org 53 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes, that also caught me as a bizarre thing to say. Sadly low bar for sports journalism

big if true, small if false

I can't wait for the inglourious bastardsing of ICE agents.

Catching former ICE agents and smashing their heads with baseball bats I suppose. Or carving 'MAGA' on their foreheads with knifes.

No. He wasn't meant to. But Jake Paul took some serious punches in the later rounds.

[–] psycho_driver@lemmy.world 45 points 1 day ago (2 children)

This is really fucked up but the silver lining is I didn't even know Jake Paul had had a fight.

Wonder how much of a shitshow the World Cup is going to be? Nobody is going to want to go to the US to play if they could wind up in some gulag.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 4 points 12 hours ago

Football fans would willingly go to a gulag to watch the World Cup. They went to Qatar without any hesitation. 99% of people don't take politics, human rights or morality into consideration when planning entertainment.

[–] sliceoflife@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There will be a LOT of visa denials to come for the games, then if you are here the week after the games, be waylaid on the way TO the airport with your bags packed and lawyer riding shotgun or be ready to loose a few months being shipped to a country you are NOT from.

[–] JuxtaposedJaguar@lemmy.ml 1 points 11 hours ago

be ready to loose a few months being shipped to a country you are NOT from

It'd be more than a few months. Once you're sitting in CECOT after some ICE agent says you kind of look like you're in a gang, Mr. Bukkake will keep you there forever. Even if you can get a court to rule that your detainment is unconstitutional, that doesn't mean anything anymore.

Surely he was legal to be here for the Jake Paul fight which was only 5 days ago. This is quite a shocker. And I question why any Mexican athlete would ever want to step foot in the United States after an incident like this.

[–] BeBopaLula@piefed.ca 110 points 2 days ago (1 children)

At this point it’s they will deport you because your eyebrows look funny. No one is safe. Stay out of the states, it is a fascist shithole.

[–] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 40 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And if you're lucky they'll deport you to your home country. If you're not lucky, they may drop you in a gulag or a war zone.

[–] BeBopaLula@piefed.ca 27 points 2 days ago (1 children)

or they feed you to the alligators which seems to be their new toy.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 1 points 15 hours ago

Slavers used slave children for alligator bait.

[–] LilB0kChoy@midwest.social 31 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's entirely possible that this is because of the 3,000/day quota they were set. If they deport them rather than just let them leave then they can credit that as a 'deportation'.

[–] rc__buggy@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

bruh, he's got a nicer house in LA than I'll ever have. He doesn't want to go to Mexico and face his warrants. That guy really wants to stay here

[–] LilB0kChoy@midwest.social 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Are the warrants legitimate? Are any of the claims made by DHS or ICE to be trusted? This is a legitimate question because I don't follow boxing and just assume at this point that anything ICE/DHS says is lies.

[–] rc__buggy@sh.itjust.works 24 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Yeah, apparently. Just a few hours ago Mexico had a press release saying they do have warrants for him. It's been a rumor for the entire lead up to this fight and people (including me) were wondering WTF he was thinking with the current environment here in the US and Mexico having so much trouble the past few months with cartel violence. They gonna "martyr" him.

edit: he's had a checkered past. Known to dabble in drugs to the point of needing rehab, plus court ordered rehab in the USA, multiple arrests including ghost guns, general debauchery like you might expect from a nepo baby.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (3 children)

So is this what's gonna happen for every deportation going forward? The "he was no angel" narrative?

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Only the high profile ones

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago

Because the low profile ones don't make the news.

[–] OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That’s the Right’s MO. See also: any victim of police murder/brutality (eg:George Floyd), the people Kyle Rittenhouse murdered, any peaceful protesters who get assaulted, and so on.

Nah, this one makes complete sense if there were warrants out for his arrest in Mexico. We have extradition laws with Mexico (and most every other country in the Americas). Which is why we know most of these deportations are bologna. If someone actually had a warrant out for their arrest and was arrested for anything in the U.S. they would have been flagged for extradition when their ID was taken. If we couldn't correctly ID them, then there was no way for the U.S. to suddenly claim they had charges against them in another country. Any way you put it together, the executive branch is lying.

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 6 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

He was standing with the president of Mexico as recently as 2 weeks ago. The idea that he had a warrant out for his arrest at that time is clearly bogus.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/7/4/boxer-julio-cesar-chavez-jr-likely-to-soon-be-deported-to-mexico-sheinbaum

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced she expects boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr to soon be deported from the United States to serve a sentence for arms trafficking and organised crime.

[–] Daft_ish@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 15 hours ago

I think Mexico might have a problem with orginized crime, but hey who doesn't! Certainly not america....

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

So Mexico is lying as well now then, that's not good. Because Mexico confirmed it from what we know right?

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I've heard nothing from either government yet. Still currently accusations, no results no evidence. A lot of people connecting some dots, which are that Chavez Jr is recently married to an ex of the El Chapo family, and maybe this is meant to be some sort of example by the Trump admin for whataver reason. If you look back on Chavez Jr's history, he's basically a young rich kid in Mexico and that meant hanging out with the other young rich kids including the rich kids of crime families. Which he's now marrying an in-law of.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico said on Friday that she expects the prominent boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. to be deported to Mexico to face charges of organized crime and arms trafficking

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

This shit is truly insane. He's not changed anything about his life recently besides fighting Jake Paul.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago) (1 children)

So are you claiming mexico is lying? Or Mexico is telling the truth? Or the U.S is lying, which Mexico said was false

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

This weapons charge would surely have been a problem when he fought Jake Paul 4 days prior, right? Why do you think it is suddenly a problem afterwards?

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Did it make the U.S. money before the fight?

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

It sold out an arena in Anaheim. So yes it made money. I heard Chavez Jr. was guaranteed 750k with about ~$3mil bonus based on the PPV sales. PPV money is notorious slow and takes ~2 months to be received.
