Did he win?

[–] Ceedoestrees@lemmy.world 35 points 8 hours ago

I can't wait for the inglourious bastardsing of ICE agents.

[–] teawrecks@sopuli.xyz 58 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Given recent performances I think most boxing fans won't mind seeing him being escorted back across the border

Am I the only one who thinks this is unsportsmanlike to say? If someone is worth fighting against inside the ring, then they're worth fighting with outside the ring.

[–] habs@lemmy.sdf.org 25 points 8 hours ago

Yes, that also caught me as a bizarre thing to say. Sadly low bar for sports journalism

[–] psycho_driver@lemmy.world 29 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

This is really fucked up but the silver lining is I didn't even know Jake Paul had had a fight.

[–] charade_you_are@sh.itjust.works 4 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I was going to pirate it but then I just sort of forgot

[–] Chip_Rat@lemmy.world 11 points 5 hours ago

And nothing of value was lost.

[–] radiofreebc@lemmy.world 62 points 18 hours ago (4 children)

Wonder how much of a shitshow the World Cup is going to be? Nobody is going to want to go to the US to play if they could wind up in some gulag.

[–] skuzz@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 15 hours ago

Or perhaps the best vehicle to ship in "soccer teams" that are a first wave strike force of freedom. D-Day just got cleats.

America is a Nazi state.

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 154 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (5 children)

Surely he was legal to be here for the Jake Paul fight which was only 5 days ago. This is quite a shocker. And I question why any Mexican athlete would ever want to step foot in the United States after an incident like this.

Nah, this one makes complete sense if there were warrants out for his arrest in Mexico. We have extradition laws with Mexico (and most every other country in the Americas). Which is why we know most of these deportations are bologna. If someone actually had a warrant out for their arrest and was arrested for anything in the U.S. they would have been flagged for extradition when their ID was taken. If we couldn't correctly ID them, then there was no way for the U.S. to suddenly claim they had charges against them in another country. Any way you put it together, the executive branch is lying.

[–] LilB0kChoy@midwest.social 24 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

It's entirely possible that this is because of the 3,000/day quota they were set. If they deport them rather than just let them leave then they can credit that as a 'deportation'.

[–] rc__buggy@sh.itjust.works 10 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

bruh, he's got a nicer house in LA than I'll ever have. He doesn't want to go to Mexico and face his warrants. That guy really wants to stay here

[–] LilB0kChoy@midwest.social 16 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Are the warrants legitimate? Are any of the claims made by DHS or ICE to be trusted? This is a legitimate question because I don't follow boxing and just assume at this point that anything ICE/DHS says is lies.

[–] rc__buggy@sh.itjust.works 19 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

Yeah, apparently. Just a few hours ago Mexico had a press release saying they do have warrants for him. It's been a rumor for the entire lead up to this fight and people (including me) were wondering WTF he was thinking with the current environment here in the US and Mexico having so much trouble the past few months with cartel violence. They gonna "martyr" him.

edit: he's had a checkered past. Known to dabble in drugs to the point of needing rehab, plus court ordered rehab in the USA, multiple arrests including ghost guns, general debauchery like you might expect from a nepo baby.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 12 points 9 hours ago (3 children)

So is this what's gonna happen for every deportation going forward? The "he was no angel" narrative?

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 6 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Only the high profile ones

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 7 points 7 hours ago

Because the low profile ones don't make the news.

[–] OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world 7 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

That’s the Right’s MO. See also: any victim of police murder/brutality (eg:George Floyd), the people Kyle Rittenhouse murdered, any peaceful protesters who get assaulted, and so on.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

That’s the Right’s MO.

Which is why it's represented on lemmy.

[–] rc__buggy@sh.itjust.works -1 points 6 hours ago

For overrated nepo baby fighters? Lets hope so!

[–] BeBopaLula@piefed.ca 96 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

At this point it’s they will deport you because your eyebrows look funny. No one is safe. Stay out of the states, it is a fascist shithole.

[–] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 32 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

And if you're lucky they'll deport you to your home country. If you're not lucky, they may drop you in a gulag or a war zone.

[–] BeBopaLula@piefed.ca 22 points 21 hours ago

or they feed you to the alligators which seems to be their new toy.

[–] rc__buggy@sh.itjust.works 10 points 17 hours ago

It's complicated. He's not just some worker snatched off the street. They are, of course, saying he lied on his Green Card application but I have no idea if that's true. However, he has active arrest warrants in Mexico and married a cartel widow to apply for his Green Card.

He's shady, but IMO isn't like a "threat" threat.

[–] RejZoR@lemmy.ml 51 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

I hope they achieve that no one will ever want to come to shithole USA.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 hours ago

There's always FIFA, they'll put up with anything.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 17 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

I can of course only speak for myself, but I can assure you, there's no fucking way in hell I'll ever go there.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 6 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

It took me a few attempts, but i eventually got what you meant by steal fur lol

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago

Oops. Thanks for the heads up.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 18 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (4 children)

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a statement claiming Chavez Jr has an arrest warrant back in Mexico for his alleged involvement in trafficking firearms, explosives and ammunition while he’s also being accused of being an affiliate of the Sinaloa Cartel

Assuming that any of that is true (and I guess it is as this would come from Mexico, not trump) then this is actually someone that any country would want to deport. Hell, Mexico would want to deport this piece of trash.

That is, again, if the above is correct

[–] jonne@infosec.pub 38 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

You would think they would've have let him come into the country knowing all that? It's not like he crossed the Rio Grande to fight Jake Paul.

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 22 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

He lives in Mexico. He would have left on his own. It's unclear why ICE felt the need to get involved.

[–] Albbi@lemmy.ca 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Gotta use up that budget somehow!

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 1 points 58 minutes ago

You guys think I'm joking about the staples, but I assure you I'm not.

[–] spunow@lemmy.myserv.one 4 points 21 hours ago

I’m in disbelief that someone with as much character as Jake Paul would be fraternizing with a miscreant such as that

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 17 hours ago

Also, saying this is the kind of thing that might actually get the Sinaloa Cartel to do a hit on Jake Paul.

[–] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 22 hours ago

Someone definitely had a lot of money bet on him and is mad they lost it

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 9 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Can we deport Jake Paul, please?

[–] BlackPenguins@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago

Only if it's a two for one deal with Logan Paul.

[–] Alteon@lemmy.world 25 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

How about we stop deporting people don't like, whether they are white, brown, purple, or Jake Paul?

[–] spunow@lemmy.myserv.one 13 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Is it ok to deport the people who baselessly deport other people?

[–] ganksy@lemmy.world 6 points 19 hours ago

Someone's asking the right questions

[–] nomy@lemmy.zip 0 points 14 hours ago

I think we should make an exception for Jake Paul though. CECOT his ass.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

Ok... just screw Jake Paul, then. He's a piece of shit grifter

Edit: You may want to speak in complete sentences, too.

[–] naught@sh.itjust.works 1 points 17 hours ago

they forgot a single word, fam. why don't you -
