Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

That’s a mistake.

We need to elect politicians willing to take a hard line against the US.

[–] Anonymaus@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Problem is, there isnt anyone who isnt either in washington's or kremlin's pocket

[–] BeNotAfraid@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

We've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas!

[–] Duke_Nukem_1990@feddit.org 12 points 2 days ago

Appeasement always works, right?

[–] You@feddit.org 51 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No, Uschi. It's not the time for this kind of negotiations. It's time to set an example and send a message. After the countermeasures take effect, we can still send him flowery messages (in simple language) and an old Airbus with a bow.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Exactly. At the very least call his bluff!

[–] SpicyLizards@reddthat.com 27 points 3 days ago

Have they learned nothing from the last rounds?

He thinks he's playing it cleverly, and all foreigners are humbled by his superiority. It's pathetic.

And then there are people like von der Leyen who actually prove him right. *sigh*

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago

Saps. Dupes. Easy marks. Etc...

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You don't negotiate with terrorists.

[–] the_wiz@feddit.org 1 points 3 days ago (2 children)

If the terrorists have the biggest military in the world, control over all major digital services, a secret service that knows when you last have pooped AND have enough force for a literal occupation already on your territory... well... things get more complicated

[–] SpaceShort@feddit.uk 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We have nukes. We can set them off should they invade. Better nuclear war than fascist rule.

[–] the_wiz@feddit.org -2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well, here we differ: I will happily live under a fascist ruler if the alternative is dying in (nuclear-) fire.

I suspect this is something you learn if you grow older, have family... and have witnessed actual combat...

[–] SpaceShort@feddit.uk 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Mate. Fascists put everyone they hate in camps and torture them to death. Better nuclear war as that is quick and relatively painless.

[–] the_wiz@feddit.org -4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Mate, it's only a problem if you are a member of the groups the traditional fascist hates, sooo...

[–] SpaceShort@feddit.uk 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Once they've finished with these groups they'll move on to other groups and continue whittling down their ingroup until there is no one left.

Also nice job showing that minority groups are an acceptable price to pay for your cowardice.

Well, it worked out pretty well for my grandparents, so I am not that concerned

Also nice job showing that minority groups are an acceptable price to pay for your cowardice.

This would also apply for anybody born in the "developed world" if you think a bit about it

[–] SpaceShort@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"Well, it worked out pretty well for my grandparents, so I am not that concerned"

That's cause the Nazis were defeated.

[–] the_wiz@feddit.org 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well, my grandfather on my mothers side was an SA man, rolled with the things life put in his way, brought his family good through the war and into the post war period. Grandfather on my dad's side was a soldier, spend some time at the end of the war in captivity, but also turned out OK.

The lesson learned: Its better to roll with the things to come instead of fighting what is inevitable

[–] SpaceShort@feddit.uk 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Dafuq? Nothing inevitable about fascism. Also, you're example is worse than being a surrender monkey, it's being actively involved in the crimes of the regime.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 3 points 3 days ago

'Complicated' is certainly one way to put it.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Each day, I'm hating von der Leyen more.

[–] SebaDC@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 3 days ago (3 children)

That's what some people want... Not saying I like her. But Russia, China and now the USA want Europeans to be divided on our perception of European politicians.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 5 points 2 days ago

I see your point, but I don't feel divided about the EU; and "feeling divided about politicians" is basically the definition of democracy.

And if you didn't catch my drift, von der Leyen's track record has not been very good for years.

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago

Yes, they all want us to vote for the far-right populist candidate instead.

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 5 points 3 days ago (2 children)

God forbid we get decent politicians that arent deep diving in corruption and brought to power in shady backroom deals...

[–] the_wiz@feddit.org 2 points 3 days ago

Well, those spawn from time to time... but they are normally honored obituaries after an "unfortunate accident"...

[–] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago
[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 days ago

DOUBLE REVERSE TARIFFS.

And 1% permanent tariff every time he does this shit.

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Well because the EU realises that if you increase tariffs then people pay the price (or variety of goods they can buy comfortably decreases)

[–] Don_alForno@feddit.org 21 points 3 days ago

What the should do is tax their fucking techbro companies already. People don't pay for Instagram and google, companies using their shitty spying ad networks do, so it would be killing two birds with one stone.
