The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in July removed references to President Donald Trump’s two impeachments from an exhibit display. A person familiar with the exhibit plans, who was not authorized to discuss them publicly, said the change came about as part of a content review that the Smithsonian agreed to undertake following pressure from the White House to remove an art museum director.

A temporary label including content about Trump’s impeachments had been on display since September 2021 at the Washington museum, a Smithsonian spokesperson told The Washington Post, adding that it was intended to be a short-term addition to address current events. Now, the exhibit notes that “only three presidents have seriously faced removal.”

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 134 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

People wonder how Germany was taken over by the Nazis. This is how.

This is the Fascist States of America and will be until someone stands up. "Home of the Brave" huh.

Roughly 62% of its annual budget comes from federal. Realistically, they must cave to the dear leader or at least pick battles very carefully.

[–] truthfultemporarily@feddit.org 91 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Every person and institution saying that is what enables fascism.

[–] teawrecks@sopuli.xyz 17 points 4 days ago

"As specified in the Smithsonian's charter, the Chief Justice of the United States and the Vice President of the United States are ex officio members of the Board, meaning that they serve as a duty of their office. The Chief Justice also serves as the Chancellor of the Smithsonian."

In other words, you're wondering why Chief Justice Roberts and J.D. Vance let this fly.

"Just let ME retire before the shit hits the fan"

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 34 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Ok.

When the fascist leader is trying to censor history at the national history museum, that's the battle to fight.

What we learned so far is that they will lose the funding anyway unless there is a way to weaponize it somehow.

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 8 points 4 days ago

Good point. If they’re delaying the inevitable, might as well stand for something.

[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 20 points 4 days ago

"On Tyranny"'s first chapter is "Do not obey in advance". I think more people need to listen to that 2 hour audiobook.

[–] halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world 19 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I'm getting really tired of Congress abdicating their power of the purse to the Executive. They talked about that shit like it was the holy grail for decades and then one shit for brains comes along and they decide they don't care about anything anymore.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 7 points 4 days ago

republican, and dino congressmen wants in on the grift of what TRUMP is offering, of course they arnt going to bite the hands thats feeds them. they know its probably thier last chance in offince anyways.

[–] chosensilence@pawb.social 15 points 4 days ago

Disgraceful.

You are a museum, a place to see history as it actually was. Caving to a dick-tator... Just wow...

Fuck if I'll ever go to the Smithsonian after this. The Pedo is just going to pull your funding anyways so wtf???

[–] Furbag@lemmy.world 106 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Jesus fucking Christ, what is going on lately with people just buckling under the slightest amount of pressure from Trump? Fight back you goddamn pussies.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 38 points 4 days ago

Seriously it's so pathetic. People will just bend over and take it.

The world needs more asshole leftists who don't take shit from anyone. Far too many dickheads are on the wrong side of the political spectrum.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 28 points 3 days ago

The fucking fragility. Pathetic.

[–] n3m37h@sh.itjust.works 90 points 4 days ago

Yep, totally normal thing to do, nothing to see here folks. There are no Epstein files....

[–] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 53 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Might as well stop the whole operation then. A museum's most precious good is its credibility. If visitors can't trust that the information you present is factual, why should they visit?

Even if part of your funding is at risk, is this worth it? Cut costs, do a fundraiser, forego pay of leadership personnel, if you need to, but without credibility, you're no longer running a museum but a theme park.

Not too long in the future:

The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became the truth.

That book, along with Animal Farm, should be a mandatory book to read in school.

Banana republic

A banana republic is a country with an economy of state capitalism, where the country is operated as a private commercial enterprise for the exclusive profit of the ruling class. Typically, a banana republic has a society of extremely stratified social classes, usually a large impoverished working class and a ruling class plutocracy, composed of the business, political, and military elites. The ruling class controls the primary sector of the economy by exploiting labor.

Sure would be funny if Smithsonian Patrons kept changing it back.

"Congress has only Impeached a President four times, 1/2 of them against the same President.'

[–] pageflight@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

Time to get that Streisand effect rolling!

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 27 points 4 days ago

Thereby literally rewriting history for the Cheeto

Man Americans are knee benders and ting kissers

[–] MisterOwl@lemmy.world 26 points 4 days ago

Never thought I'd see the day when the Smithsonian would lose all its credibility. Bootlickers and cowards.

[–] Pacattack57@lemmy.world 25 points 4 days ago

They should have just rewrote it in a bigly way. “The greatest president. So good he was impeached twice. He won the impeachments and became emperor. What a swell guy.”

[–] febra@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

People are surprised to find out that this is the reality under capitalism. When everything is tied to pandering to the upper class, you working class suckers always get the short end of the stick. Even when it comes to "liberal institutions". If their profits are gone, they are gone. Their existence is intrinsically tied to pandering to the upper class. This is why capitalism is intrinsically fascistic.

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 20 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Should have just closed the exhibit “due to funding”

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 19 points 4 days ago

OUR APOLOGIES, THE EXHIBIT ON IMPEACHMENT HAS BEEN CLOSED DUE TO SOMEONE BEING A WHINY-ASS LITTLE BITCH

[–] Lucky_777@lemmy.world 16 points 4 days ago (2 children)

It's going to be fun rewriting history after this stupid bastard dies off. That day can't come soon enough.

[–] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 14 points 4 days ago

It won't just be him. It'll be everyone that was surrounding him or placed by this administration. The cancer runs deep and has metastasized.

[–] 474D@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

He might have created the movement, but the support of it didn't magically appear. The truth is that this rhetoric and mindset never went away. Trump is an idiot that rallied them, imagine an intelligent person instead after him... I hope the next generations don't follow what the dying out ones do

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago (4 children)

I get it... put it back as soon as he's gone. Hopefully it'll be 3 or more by then, with a final successful one

[–] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 24 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Bro. He’s a child rapist. They’re not gonna impeach him. They’re not gonna remove him. He’s a child rapist and they’d all gladly lick his asshole live on the House floor.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 4 days ago

the people funding trump, is also funding the gop, and DINOS.

[–] EightBitBlood@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Put it back as soon as he's gone?

My dude. America has yet to put a single fucking thing back after a Republican takes it.

Abortions rights. Voting rights. Workers rights. Right to Healthcare. Right to education. Right to transparent government funding (Citizens United) Right to privacy (Patriot Act) Right to fair information. Right to have our taxes go towards social benefits rather than Reaganomics.

If you're waiting for anything to change back, no matter how small, it's not.

[–] DrDickHandler@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Fascism is there stay in America for decades to come.

Conversations about impeachment just aren't complete without the man who was impeached the best and the most!

[–] TommySoda@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I feel like this has less to do with changing history and more to do with Trump's fragile ego. I'm not saying that they aren't trying to rewrite history and that is absolutely disgusting, just that this one doesn't really make any sense when you really take a step back and think about it. If anything an actual strong person would wear it as a badge of honor to prove how right he is that the "deep state" is still trying to get him, which Trump has done in the past. I say this is an indicator that he's in panic mode trying to fix his image right now which is kinda pathetic.

Turning the Smithsonian into the Time Masheen from idiocracy

[–] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

They’d better put that orange cunt back in the exhibit after he fucks off.

Republicans are filthy traitor swine and it is your duty to do what is in your power to make them suffer.
