To be fair, this is how everyone looked in the 90s.

In the case of Civilization it is true: modern Civs use cartoonish-caricatirish style, and this image is indeed more realistic.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 10 points 4 weeks ago

Civ vacillates between realistic and cartoonish.

On a 14" CRT monitor? It looked fantastic! .... or maybe it was just the radiation I was feeling?

I was so poor, I could only get EGA. My rich friends had VGA. 256 colors. So many colors.

Every game is just an HD rerelease of Pong.

I mean, that was literal in the case of anything on the 2600 or 7800.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

Hah! You made me realize that Adventure was fancy pong where you got to drive the ball.

I remember saying these exact words the first time I saw the original X-wing on the PC with VGA graphics.

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 7 points 4 weeks ago

For me it was Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.

Some vga games still hold up

I don't think I ever had a point where I felt things reached a pinnacle. Photo-realistic was a goal, but nothing reached that. Some games looked good and I could be impressed with 3d, but that excitement was about how good they were getting, so anticipating what they would look like in the future

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I still don't know a single photorealistic game except for some military simulators or flight simulator

[–] raef@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

No, still evolving. I'm sure if it ever got to some sci-fi, brain-jacked virtual reality, people would still be chasing elusive more realistic experiences

This is what I love about looking back at the past. We always thought it can’t get better then it did.
Even Crysis, which was the pinnacle of graphics at one point, looks really outdated nowadays.

[–] MyDarkestTimeline01@ani.social 7 points 4 weeks ago

We were so easily impressed.

The PS1/PS2 era was the highlight of gaming. Before it was pixelated and after it was enshitificated due always online / subscriptions etc.

[–] Iheartcheese@lemmy.world 12 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

we got better titties now tho.

[–] Samsy@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 weeks ago

Fair enough.

I played through all Tomb Raider PSx on my RetroPi at least twice.

[–] namelivia@lemmy.world 5 points 4 weeks ago

That was my thought the first time I walked into an arcade room and watched the first Virtua Fighter running on a big screen.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 4 points 4 weeks ago

I was amazed when Rome Total War came out. 20 years later, the game looks like it was made on Windows Paint. At least Creative Assembly remastered the game.

I remember playing some racing game on the Sega saturn and thinking the same
