Ukraine doesn't have to outlast the Russian military, just the Russian economy.

No. The war is unpopular, but Zelenskyy is still popular.

I think it is clear that the Ukrainian people would accept a negotiated settlement including the loss of territory, but I don't see total capitulation as politically acceptable. The big sticking point appears to be who guarantees Ukrainian independence after the war.

Surrender as in just give up and let Russia take control of all of Ukraine? Abso-fucking-lutely not.

Surrender the lost territories, however? It's without a doubt going to happen.

I'm referring to surrendering the lost territories.

[–] Perspectivist@feddit.uk 2 points 21 hours ago

Well there I don't see any other options. No matter how much people tell them not to give an inch, that's just not realistic. The options are pretty much to cut your losses or take back the occupied territories by force. That's just not going to happen. If it was possible it would've already happened. The defensive positions preventing Ukraine to take back the lost ground are significantly more substantial than the ones holding Russia back. If they had equal numbers of men, then maybe but Russia has near infinite source of soldiers to toss into the meat grinder.

I think Russia will surrender soon.

[–] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why? Seems like wishful thinking at best

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's my favorite kind of thinking.

Fair enough

No, absolutely not

Given that there is no situation that is improved by surrendering to Russia, and the Ukrainians are more aware of this than anyone else, no.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuggggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhghhh no.

No. It's unlikely either side will surrender. But then I don't know what goes on inside the countries. We had an interesting Wagner mutiny in Russia for example. Something similar could happen for either side.

Most likely outcome seems to be that eventually the Russians stop making gains and they will demand consessions (territory) that Ukraine is willing to accept. There will be some kind of guarantee for Ukrainian independence.

[–] setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

No, though it seems like both sides have lost the appetite and ability to execute meaningful large scale maneuvers. I have wondered if it might end up with some kind of cease-fire agreement that leads to a simmering militarized border while the war is still technically ongoing, similar to North and South Korea.

[–] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago

Probably not in the immediate future. I get the impression that Ukraine has reached the point where surrendering territory is ultimately on the table, but they're going to need a credible security guarantee afterwards, or what's the point?

Neither will surrender, they'll come to an agreement to end the war, likely involving Russia taking some of Ukraine's land and cities.

Ukraine controls some of Russian territory, do they get that?
