Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Many phrases for defecating use the word "take". It makes no sense to me

It's not meant to mean taking a literal piece of shit. "A shit" in this context means the entire act. Take a break, take a shit, take piss, etc., refer to doing the act.

[–] benni@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

So what do you think happens to all the shit you leave around? Someone's gotta take it.

[–] 01189998819991197253@infosec.pub 3 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Sure. But it's not you.

Wait... is... is it you?

[–] benni@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

That's irrelevant. But if someone leaves it, someone else will have to take it, is what I'm saying. Like in general.

[–] Jollyllama@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago

I once told a version of this at a stand up open mic, it did very well.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 12 points 19 hours ago

"I'm going to take a shit."

"Well don't take any of mine! I'm saving those for later!"

[–] mitrosus@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 17 hours ago

English is the shit we keep taking

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We don't have to take any shit from you here.

[–] I_Fart_Glitter@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago (1 children)
[–] AmosBurton_ThatGuy@lemmy.ca 2 points 17 hours ago

Does your shit have glitter in it?

[–] TranquilTurbulence@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago

Same here. I just abandon it instead of taking, giving or whatever it is that some people do.

Take ~= have ~= do

Take a break == have a break, but a break isn't a tangible thing, so this is shorthand for "do the actions required to constitute a break"

[–] null@lemmy.nullspace.lol 8 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I don't want to have a shit, either -- I'm trying to get rid of the dang thing!

[–] subignition@fedia.io 1 points 15 hours ago

Then this is one verb you should definitely not noun

Shit as a verb, not a noun.

[–] TranquilTurbulence@lemmy.zip 5 points 17 hours ago

That's the bizarre thing about English. Maybe native English speakers don't really think about it, but as someone looking at this mess from the outside, I can tell you that it's really nice when verbs and nouns are distinct.

Chinese people say pull a poop, and I think that's beautiful.

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 17 hours ago

Oooo new debate: push vs pull

[–] Devadander@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago

Reminds me of the ASL sign for it

[–] UnculturedSwine@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 15 hours ago

It's like having a nice lunch. Take can often just mean do like 'take a break'

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 13 hours ago

if its BROWN let it mellow.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 7 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

You've never "taken a break" or "taken a time-out" or "taken a nap"?

It's not like "taking a X" is a foreign construct.

[–] lauha@lemmy.world 12 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I take a break, a nap and a time out because Inwant those things for myself. I don't want shit.

[–] FuckFascism@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Wait... you mean I don't have to shove my dog's shit up my ass?!

[–] squaresinger@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

That is what every dog owner should be forced to do who doesn't clean up their dog's shit.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm going to have a shit. Which doesn't sound quite right either when you look at it that way.

I run into the stall, push the people off the toilet and jam it into my own ass while it’s still warm.

[–] call_me_xale@lemmy.zip 5 points 22 hours ago

This comment, officer, this one right here.
