  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.

  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

Far right idiots

Fascism, Nazis, Housin, no future retirement for young people, russia and too much bureaucracy! School system and schools that havent been updated since 1960/1970s. And nothing is digital

[–] EvilCartyen@feddit.dk 3 points 1 day ago

Denmark... I don't think we have a lot of serious national problems. Our main problem seems to be climate change, a global issue, and our allies in the US having lost their marbles.

[–] Matombo@feddit.org 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The looming treat of fashism

[–] syreus@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

*Fascism

Fashism is a failed startup backed by Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, and a bunch of venture capitalist nobody would recognize. Imagine how many people watched that happen and said nothing.

Ignoring the other typo but this word gets misspelled a lot.

[–] pulsey@feddit.org 5 points 1 day ago

Fashism is such a shitty name for a company. holy shit.

[–] Ooops@feddit.org 35 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Correct answer for basically every country: far-right extremists and the hardcore neoliberal capitalist right (that will happily cooperate with the former if given the chance)... constantly pushed by bad foreign (to destabilise democracies) and domestic (to enrich themselves at the expense of democracy) actors^(*)^.

^(*)^: bonus points for US tech bros often matching both categories

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 27 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Neoliberals, nazis, shit weather.

Not nearly as sexy.

[–] elvith@feddit.org 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

So... Somewhere ~~in Europe~~ on Planet Earth?

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 6 points 2 days ago

Hey that is unfair. There is plenty of places with good weather.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 8 points 2 days ago

Gosh, how'd you know?

[–] petrescatraian@libranet.de 5 points 2 days ago

@Lumidaub this, plus corruption, plus Russia

[–] Tuuktuuk@sopuli.xyz 25 points 2 days ago

From Finland. So, the answer is extremely easy to answer: Our eastern neighbour having turned fascist and their Ruler having declared they want to make my country part of said neighbour.

[–] Ontimp@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago

Germany: Risk of (nuclear) war, reversion to digital quasi-feudal economic structures, far-right politics, etc.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 16 points 2 days ago

Germany: Domestic rightwingers are trying to dismantle everything we have achieved since after WW2, supported by foreign dictators.

[–] Hotznplotzn@lemmy.sdf.org 17 points 2 days ago

Russia, China, and other autocracies.

[–] randomname@scribe.disroot.org 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

European countries' biggest problems come from abroad, in particular from the East.

Well nothing's ever gone wrong in Europe blaming internal strife on Those Foreigners From The East

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Yeah, it is those damn foreigners that slashed taxes, privatized infrastructure, gutted social systems, "liberated" the markets and caused the birth rates to drop below stability rates by making life unaffordable. Also climate change is those damn foreigners fault. After all the Steam Engine and industrialization are known to be inventions of the devilish Maori tribes in New Zealand, who came to pillage unsuspecting and peaceful Europe on their raiding boats.

[–] randomname@scribe.disroot.org 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don' t understand why you react so uneasy. Russia and China are the greatest threats to European and Western democracies, there is no doubt about that. Invading other countries (or the threat thereof), disinformation and misinformation campaigns, election interference, Moscow and Beijing's support of European far-right (and far-left) parties, cyber attacks, arson attacks and other sabotage acts have been increasing in recent years. And this list isn't even complete.

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The UK and other EU countries are becoming increasingly authoritarian. Crackdowns on peaceful protest, branding protests against genocide and against climate change as "terrorism", Crackdowns on progressive media with illegal searches and seizures of equipment, attempts to influence press directly, cooperation with far right and fascist media to discredit peaceful protests while downplaying racist riots, Attacks on whistleblowers such as the torture of Julian Assange...

All of these are justified with some external threat and alleging that people who care about human rights, climate change or want their governments not to engage in severe crimes are painted as "foreign agents" in order to not address the question, why the UK and other governments are engaged in severe crimes.

At the same time taxes for the rich are reduced, austerity measures are hardened and Fascists are on the rise, with the complicity or inaction of the supposed "centrist" governments. All of this is doing Russia and China a great favor.

[–] Micromot@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So, you agree with the other commenter that china and russia are funding destabilisation in european countries?

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The issue of China and Russia seeking to destabilize European countries should not be equated with accusing and crushing every protest movement as being funded by either. Incidentally the movements where that is actually known, Fascists and other far-right are getting a rather light treatment, even though their ties to Russia and China are well known, such as with the AfD in Germany and related movements.

Going back to Palestine, Israel has a rather ambiguous relationship with Russia and happily throws European countries under the bus, if it servers their own interests. For instance Israel supplied Russia with surveillance drones after Russia annexed Crimea and started to have "green men" appear in Donetsk and Lushansk. Israel also wanted Russia to keep a military presence in Syria, and even told the Ukrainian government behind closed doors it should just surrender to Russia.

So governments like in the UK or Germany are helping Russia triplefold. First by supporting Israel against EU interests, then by eroding civil rights with authoritarian crackdowns as well as supporting Israeli war crimes, thereby legitimizing Russias brutal regime and finally by continuously strengthening the Fascists that are back by Russia.

Instead of addressing these issues, people who protest against that are brandished and repressed under the guise of fighting Russian influence, which is a transparent lie, once you look at the whole picture.

[–] randomname@scribe.disroot.org 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

@Saleh@feddit.org

The issue of China and Russia seeking to destabilize European countries should not be equated with accusing and crushing every protest movement

No one has 'equated' anything here. This is your interpretation.

There is also reason why you permanently raise Palestine/Israel if someone says that Russia and China are biggest threats to Europe. This amounts to whataboutism.

You appear to counter any argument always with the Israel's genocide in Palestine. Whatever one says, you come up with this single point. This amounts to propaganda.

people who care about human rights, climate change or want their governments not to engage in severe crimes are painted as β€œforeign agents” in order to not address the question, why the UK and other governments are engaged in severe crimes.

People who care about human rights and climate change are indeed often painted as "foreign agents" - but this happens in Russia. The Kremlin's list of banned organizations has been growing steadily and includes even the non-existent LGBQ movement.

You turn things upside down here.

Europe has certainly formidable problems. But it must be clearly said that Russia and China are the greatest threats to Western democracies. Russia attempted genocide in Ukraine, China's decisive support, massive disinformation campaigns by these dictatorships, election interference, Moscow and Beijing’s support of European far-right (and far-left) parties, cyber attacks, arson attacks and other sabotage acts - there is strong evidence.

Russia and China are the biggest threats to Europe.

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Someone claimed that the problems of the EU would be "foreign". I showed that many of these problems are domestic. As i have shown by causing these problems the EU governments are knowingly and willfully strengthening those parts of society that actually are known to cooperate with Russia and China to destabilize the countries.

Meanwhile the protest groups that are criminalized as "foreign agents" such as Palestine Action are actually defending supposed EU/European values and laws against criminal governments breaking these laws. The same values and laws that are supposed to differentiate European countries from authoritarian countries like Russia and China.

[–] Tuuktuuk@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago

All of the domestic problems you mentioned are results of Russian information operations. Some almost completely, some by a small part.

But all of those problems would be lesser without Russian interference. Especially regarding the far right. Just like the Russia was funding Ukraine's far right until 2014 when it bit the feeding hand, it has been doing the same in EU and is doing it to this day.

AfD is a Russian project.

All of the things will remain impossible to solve as long as the Russia has as much to say on EU politics as it does.

[–] Micromot@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

I see the issue now

[–] Tuuktuuk@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago

The question was, what is the biggest problem in your country.

The ones you listed are easily in the 2nd or 3rd place, because they are very huge problems as well. But of course the Russia wanting to wage a war against several European countries is the biggest problem.

The reason those other problems were not mentioned is that the question allows the answer to contain only one thing.

[–] sjmulder@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Netherlands: successive governments have been putting off actually addressing issues causing them to become a pile of confounding crises, such as nitrogen emissions and housing, which complicates migration, etc.

[–] Keelhaul@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Why solve issues when you can double it and give it to the next cabinet?

[–] hendrik@palaver.p3x.de 12 points 2 days ago

neoliberalism?

[–] Pissmidget@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

People... What a bunch of bastards.

[–] BlackLaZoR@fedia.io 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Poland: We have a fucking war in the neighborhood, keeping the support for Ukraine and refugees costs fuckton of money.

[–] Melchior@feddit.org 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Does Poland ban Ukrainians from working? I thought Poland(like the rest of Europe) has a massive demographic crisis, so more workers would be needed.

[–] BlackLaZoR@fedia.io 2 points 1 day ago

The problem is that working age males aren't allowed to leave Ukraine (because war they enacted special laws)

90% of Ukrainians with refugee status in Poland are women and children. Out of remaining 10% males most are either elderly or have chronic conditions

In the peak, Poland was spending 3% of entire GDP on refugee support, and another 5% on military support

There's separate group of Ukrainians who emigrated before war, and they stay based on work permits - but they aren't refugees

[–] plactagonic@sopuli.xyz 8 points 2 days ago

I think that the biggest problem is the lack of long term thinking and planning. The polarization in politics doesn't help - every party is trying to say that it is different from the other one so even in the stuff like defense policy is so fractured across the spectrum.

Unaffordability of housing.

[–] nevemsenki@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

All the idiots.

Germany: The nuclear showdown with China and Russia is an accepted path to continue western domination. As a counter measure, the military bases with nuclear weapons will be hit with nuclear weapons.

Without that, we don't prepare for China taking over technological leadership which makes all German and European products second class. The trade advantages will melt which will destroy the economic surplus that is financing everything.

[–] FlowerFan@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Switzerland:

  • The french have brought the banlieu problem to lausanne
  • Trumps tarriffs (40%)
[–] remon@ani.social 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Also the new trams have a SOS button exactly where the door-open-button on the old version was.

[–] FlowerFan@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Imagine living in a city that isn't walkable (this post was made in lucerne) (I'm only jealous we have buses and not trams)

[–] remon@ani.social 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's really nice here. Most of the tram stops have the markings for where the disabled-friendly section of the tram will stop (and it's usually accurate, also on the newer models it doesn't matter because they all have level access). You have the white stripes for the blind people, as well. Also during work/school hours the interval is 3.5 minutes. You can't miss a tram because the next one is already around the corner.

Basel here.

[–] FlowerFan@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Basel here

So happy I didn't just write "Muesch halt ned in ZΓΌri lΓ€be" ;P

Yeah, it's about the same here in Luzern, except it's Buses not Trams.

I mean, tbh, with the amount of "Oberleitige" we have, we practically have a tram system already. I wish we would just make it officially. We already had trams, just bring them back please (the ones that are powered through the rails, not Oberleitige). I absolutely hate the cables hanging over the city and think they destroy its picture.

(Though a big advantage: I didn't have to dodge Trams on my driving exam lol. To this day I still get nervous when driving in cities with trams.)
